Queen becomes unlikely champion of conkers as she defends game against health and safety zealots

To some, it is a traditional playground game, while others believe it carries too great a risk of injury and should be banned.

Now the Queen has added her voice to the debate about conkers, by defending the game against attacks from health and safety zealots and insisting that it is in fact “harmless”.

During a discussion with Sir David Attenborough for a new documentary, the Queen appeared to reveal her disdain for those who attempt to prevent children from playing with conkers.

Home buying inflows soaring 72 pct

Capital inflows from abroad for the purchase of property in Greece are expected to come close to half a billion euros this year, after posting a remarkable 72 percent annual increase in the first seven months of the year according to the analysis of Bank of Greece data.

The increase in incoming tourism combined with the emergence of significant investment opportunities – even in the luxury property category – have considerably strengthened demand for assets such as holiday homes around the country.

Self-driving shuttle bus in crash on first day

A self-driving shuttle bus in Las Vegas was involved in a crash on its first day of service.

The vehicle - carrying “several” passengers - was hit by a lorry driving at slow speed.

Nobody was injured in the incident which city officials say was the fault of the human driver of the lorry. The man was subsequently given a ticket by police.

NHS spends £16 on rubber gloves which can be bought for 35 pence

The Health Secretary said the NHS could save up to a £1 billion a year by opting for cheaper products, as he announced new tables naming the most and least efficient spenders.

Hospitals paid between 35p and £16.47 for the same single pack of 12 rubber gloves – a 47-fold difference, the data shows. And a box of 100 plasters cost one trust £1.68, while another paid £21.76 – 13 times more.

As of 2016, the number of UK residents born in Poland was estimated at 911,000, making them the largest foreign-born group in the country, and there is a wider population of British Poles, including the descendants of over 200,000 immigrants who settled in the UK after World War II. The Polish language is the second most spoken language in England and the third most spoken language in the UK after English and Welsh. About 1% of Britain's population speaks Polish.

Might not be news to everyone, but I didn't know that. Don't know why, but the 'copulate to populate' video appears to have been pulled from youtube

Staggered to see only 6% of UK, 8% of England has been built on.  So much for us being "concreted over".  My own local authority area is 27% though.

Only 3% in my UK area of Malvern and 89% rural.  Be interesting to see the growth of built-on land in Kef after the massive building boom during the 10 years before the financial crisis.
