Soldiers apologize for abusing dog

The two soldiers who were caught on video abusing a dog and throwing it down a cliff in a video that went viral on social media at the weekend apologized in a statement on Monday, saying it was an “unfortunate incident” and they did not mean to harm the animal.

The two men claimed that they were taking daily care of the dog, a stray, and asked for the public not to be too harsh in its judgment of them.

The video was shot on a mobile phone at a military camp in Konitsa, northeastern Greece, and went viral on social media at the weekend, triggering a public outcry and an investigation by Greek military authorities.

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos had called for the strictest possible penalties to be imposed on the perpetrators.

According to reports, the two men are now civilians as the incident occurred when they both doing their military service at the camp in Konitsa.

Survey: Anti-Europe sentiment falling in Greece; nearly 30% of respondents believe in 'chemtrails'

Some 68 percent of respondents believe Greece participation in the European Union is a positive development, up 15 percentage points from the previous result last year. Two-thirds of respondents believe it's in the country's best interest to remain in the Eurozone, another result reaching 2015 levels. Conversely, 57 percent said they believe Greece's entry into the common currency was a mistake.

Nevertheless, six in 10 respondents believe Greece's membership in the EU - since 1980-81 - benefited the bloc more than the country itself.

Just as surprising, given the tide of anti-bailout, anti-austerity and anti-capitalist sentiment prior to radical leftist SYRIZA's election win in January 2015, six out of 10 respondents said they agree with the argument by which the bailout memorandums "were a necessary evil, due to the country's grave situation".

In the same breath, seven out of 10 respondents said they believe the bailouts were "created" by the Europeans in order to "exploit our country".

Greeks don’t trust state services, Ombudsman says

Greeks have a lack of trust in the state and its services, according to the annual report of the Greek Ombudsman for 2017, which was submitted on Monday to Parliament Speaker Nikos Voutsis.

The independent authority said it examined 15,438 complaints filed by citizens – a 29.6 percent increase compared to 2016.

Most of the complaints filed concerned social security services (2,330), ahead of those related to town planning and zoning services (750).

Complaints regarding the entrance of foreign nationals and their residence in the country... also featured high on the complaints list.

Home prices finally start to improve

The first tangible signs of recovery in the Greek housing market were recorded last year, according to the latest survey by the RE/MAX Hellas network of estate agents, which showed prices had risen 1 percent on average compared to 2016.
