Greece’s largest bear killed in a road accident near Kastoria

Greece’s largest ever recorded bear, a 390-kilo female, was sadly killed in a road accident on the Fotini-Stavropotamos rural road near Kastoria.

According to bear sanctuary Arcturos, the average size of adult male bears in Greece is usually about 250 kilos.

The bear was killed on Friday night when a car ran over the animal, in conditions that are still being investigated.

Special 50p coin expected to mark Brexit

Ministers accused of 'giving up' on saving European Health Insurance Card after Brexit

A scheme guaranteeing urgent medical treatment for Britons visiting the EU is at fresh risk after Brexit, with an announcement of emergency legislation.

Ministers had vowed to fight to save the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) even after the UK leaves the EU, after acknowledging it had major advantages.

But they have now announced a fast-track bill they say will “provide the powers that are needed” to replicate the benefits – as part of stepping up preparations for crashing out of the EU without a deal.

The legislation would also safeguard reciprocal healthcare for 190,000 expat UK pensioners in the EU, or intending to retire to the EU, “if there is no deal”.

Pumpkin boat paddled down River Ouse in York

A man has paddled down the River Ouse in a giant pumpkin boat.

Tom Pearcy, who works at York Maze, claims it is a world record for the largest pumpkin boat, weighing 619kg (1364lbs).

As there is currently no recognised world record for the largest pumpkin boat, York Maze have applied to Guinness World Records to have this achievement recognised.
