Greeks sneer as Yanis Varoufakis reveals fortune

He made his name as the face of the anti-austerity movement but Yanis Varoufakis, Greece’s rebel economist, is now one of the country’s wealthiest politicians.

After being removed from a left-wing government in which as finance minister he became too radical, Mr Varoufakis wrote a book and built a media and speaking career that has proved so lucrative that he has bank accounts in Switzerland, a property portfolio and a boat.

His income in the past three years was €1 million, his tax returns have shown. Critics accused him of profiting from Greece’s misery and being a champagne socialist.

Conkers at risk as 40% of Europe’s native trees face extinction

Though horse chestnuts are widespread across Europe, they are naturally only native to Bulgaria, Greece, Albania and the Republic of North Macedonia.

No Conker Tree Is NOT Really At Risk Of Extinction - Is About Native Original Distribution In Greece, Albania And Macedonia

The reader will naturally assume that this means the tree that we find in our streets and gardens. There is nothing in the article to suggest anything different.

However actually, this is about the native tree in the original range of the species. It doesn’t risk extinction in our gardens and streets, after all it is easy to cultivate.

MAGNOLIA.......

This Hotel should have it's EOT Licence/Tourist Licence or whatever WITHDRAWN NOW for the way it has treated the Thomas Cook guests!!!!!
Let's hope that all the people who are thinking of booking for next year will read what is on Trip Advisor & boycott it.
It would also be a result if the other Holiday Companies dumped it because of the disgraceful behavior of it's owners!!!!!

Fairly recent event and I haven't found this anywhere else yet but this is pretty much the story I've heard locally and sounds consistent with what I know of the place: Avoid / Magnolia exit

:hmm: I'd heard that negative comments about the situation at Magnolia had been removed from Trip Advisor and it looks as though the 'Avoid' link above no longer goes to that review, which is now missing from Trip Advisor.

So, basically this is the story I've heard locally and which was mentioned in that link: guests booked through Thomas Cook were, following its collapse, told by the owner they had to pay the hotel directly themselves. Of course, no-one was happy with this as they had paid for their holiday in good faith. A 75 year old woman complained at reception and, unhappy with the owner's unpleasant and unprofessional response, broke a vase in reception. The owner grabbed the guest by the throat and pushed her down to the floor. After this the elderly guest was evicted very late at night, as were some other guests. The attack was witnessed by other guests and staff.

I'm sure we're all saddened that hoteliers have lost money through the collapse but physically assaulting guests is beyond Fawlty Towers.

It is dreadful how guests have been treated, but didn't surprise me one bit, from past experiences of doing work there. I am told that 1400 euros was demanded from some guests. If they didn't pay and refused to leave, their electricity was turned off. Many were given free accommodation in the village, where rooms were available. Many of the adverse comments on Trip Advisor were taken down, so I suggested on Facebook, that the affected guests should contact the National newspapers. They love a story like this.

Looks like the guy has re-posted, this is pretty much the original that went missing. I quote it here in case it goes missing from TA again. Hopefully the UK media will pick the story up, as Rog suggested.

Update to magnolia hotel katelois

I have been asked to review my review of magnolia hotel in katelois kefalonia. I can only confirm that my impartial views stated in the review have been drawn on what I have witnessed myself, along with other guests at the hotel. These are 1st hand accounts. The comments made to the thomas Cook rep was given to me 1st hand by the rep herself, so I've included it within the review. I simply wish to convey my experiences at this lovely looking hotel for people to make their own mind up. I do not wish to highlight one act but this is the truth of what has happened here. I'm sure future guests would wish to know what they might expect should they wish to visit this hotel. My previous review is below minus any changes I may have made

Magnolia Resort
Katelios
Reviewed whilst still here.

We are currently holidaying at the Magnolia Hotel here in Katelois. Many of the reviews are spot on regarding how nice the hotel is and its cleanliness. They are also right when they say there is a little bit of penny pinching going on with only 2 teabags, no refill, no sugar, no entertainment, very little choice at breakfast although its tastes nice enough. We are happy with the hotel as it's a little gem with a nice pool, reception area, sunbeds and when we turned up , the staff were very pleasant and helpful.

HOWEVER.... we are here whilst the Thomas cook crisis has happened and all friendliness has disappeared. This next part of the review needs to be taken with the seriousness it deserves.

Please be warned that the owners of this hotel will lie to you to meet thier own ends.

Emma our Thomas cook rep was refused entry to the hotel 'for her own safety' ( hotel said she never turned up . This is a first hand account given to me directly from the thomas Cooke rep herself) and she's told us that the hotel is Atol protected and that they have been sent a letter to that effect. Perhaps they chose to ignore it.

They locked all guests out of their rooms until they paid for them immediately with the owners stating they are not covered or insured.( as stated directly to myself and other guests)Failure to pay would result in eviction. No meeting was ever called to discuss the situation or come to an agreement.

I also witness an elderly lady being assaulted by the lady owner as she grabbed the pensioner around the neck, forced down and shouted at. The pensioner had a disagreement and smashed a few items in reception, which I don't condone, but she must have been at least 75yrs old. The lady was later evicted at midnight. ( I have since found out that it took the lady 3 days to return to the UK- messaged via trip advisers inbox )

I also witnessed the hotel staff argueing and shouting at a guest who had just returned to his locked room after being out all day. ( this guests was in the room next to me )

The way they treated guests that day was disgusting and should of been handled better. After all guests have either paid or left they are back to their smug niceties but it seems it was all about the money. In fact she said to me about her payment demands, ' - the money is better in my hands than yours' , but I can only report on her words, I'm sorry to say.

Anyway would I recommend this hotel under normal circumstances, absolutely yes, its lovely, with this management, absolutely not.

I would not wish them to profit in the future simply for the way they have shown their true colours, but make your own mind up if you dare.

I have made a couple of amendments to my original review which I hope are impartial.
