Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8896 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0635 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1241 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9403 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Airport security workers discover ginger cat hidden in suitcase
The animal was discovered at New York's JFK Airport after an agent spotted a tuft of orange fur poking out of the bag's zip

Airport security workers in New York were shocked when an X-ray scanner revealed a stowaway cat hidden in a suitcase.

The ginger cat was discovered at John F Kennedy International Airport last week, after an agent spotted a tuft of orange fur poking out of the zip of the bag.

The agents believe they may have saved the life of the animal, which nearly ended up in an inhospitable cargo hold.

The Inspiring True Story Behind Netflix's The Swimmers

Film producers were lining up in 2016 to secure rights to the life story of professional swimmers Yusra and Sara Mardini, but the sisters turned down multiple offers. The siblings were known for their remarkable story of survival and heroism, but after fleeing Syria’s ongoing civil war just one year earlier, they weren’t yet ready for the world to see it on screen.

During their journey, the sisters arrived in Turkey on a plane and hoped to reach Germany via Greece on a boat. They went up against the chilling waves of the Aegean Sea, when the motor on the overcrowded dinghy carrying 18 other asylum seekers suddenly stalled.

Wild swimmers are getting sick from sewage, campaigners say

Wild swimmers are increasingly getting sick from sewage pumped into rivers and seas, according to an environmental charity.

Photographer Alexander Ward had no idea he was putting himself at risk when he entered the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire last September.

He was taking photos of wild swimmers for a project and didn't realise he had a cut on his leg.

After developing flu symptoms, the 38-year-old, from Tattingstone, Suffolk, phoned NHS 111, who told him to go to hospital urgently.

Doctors said he had suspected leptospirosis, also called Weil's disease. They put him in isolation and gave him antibiotics for two days.

"It was quite scary and since then I have never gone into fresh water again," he said.

"I only go in salt water now and it tends to be at local spots where I know they are not directly close to sewage outlets."

Police smash phone scam website in biggest anti-fraud operation ever in UK

The Met police have smashed a global online fraud shop selling tools that allowed criminals to carry out phone scams on hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting victims.

Detectives disabled the iSpoof website as part of the biggest anti-fraud operation ever mounted in the UK.

Criminals using software purchased from the illegal site targeted victims around the world in order to steal hundreds of millions of pounds.

The subscription service, allegedly set up by 34-year-old Teejai Fletcher, who lived in a luxury flat in the Docklands, allowed heartless criminals to disguise their phone numbers and trick unsuspecting people into believing they were being called by their bank.

The average losses suffered by those targeted is estimated at £10,000, but one person is known to have had £3 million stolen.

Revealed: Tory peer Michelle Mone secretly received £29m from ‘VIP lane’ PPE firm

The Conservative peer Michelle Mone and her children secretly received £29m originating from the profits of a PPE business that was awarded large government contracts after she recommended it to ministers, documents seen by the Guardian indicate.

Lady Mone’s support helped the company, PPE Medpro, secure a place in a “VIP lane” the government used during the coronavirus pandemic to prioritise companies that had political connections. It then secured contracts worth more than £200m.

Drivers hit with 50% increase in parking tickets as 30,000 issued every day
Record 2.7 million parking tickets handed out between April and June

Drivers have been hit by a 50 per cent increase in the number of parking tickets issued by private companies.

Motoring research charity the RAC Foundation claimed it is “inconceivable” that so many drivers are intentionally breaking parking rules.

In July, the government withdrew a long-awaited code of practice aimed at eradicating some of the sector’s worst actions following a legal challenge by parking companies.

Private parking businesses have been accused of using misleading and confusing signage, aggressive debt collection and unreasonable fees.

Flossie, 26, officially the world's oldest cat

A new record has been set by a pet in south-east London as the world's oldest living cat.

Flossie, 26, of Orpington, was confirmed as the oldest cat by Guinness World Records, which said she had a human equivalent age of 120 years old.

Owner Vicki Green described Flossie as "an amazing cat" who settled in after being rehomed by Cats Protection.

Vicki said Flossie was deaf, had failing eyesight, but was still affectionate and playful.

How Greek Companies and Ghost Ships Are Helping Russia

The United States banned Russian crude oil imports months ago, and Russian ships are banned from U.S., British, and EU ports. On Dec. 5, the European Union’s sanctions on Russian crude come into effect. But Greek and other European shipping companies are currently—and legally—helping Russian exporters get their oil to the desired destination.

What’s more, a growing ghost fleet of ships that officially don’t exist and cannot, as a result, be traced or investigated is transporting sanctioned Russian goods around the world, just as it was already transporting banned Iranian, Venezuelan, and North Korean commodities. The ghost fleet is likely to grow as the EU’s oil sanctions kick in. That seriously undermines the sanctions—and creates risks on the high seas.

Liz Truss ‘painted over’ Boris Johnson’s £840-a-roll No 10 gold wallpaper, says Jeremy Hunt

In a speech at The Spectator's Parliamentarian awards, where he won survivor of the year, he continued: "The massive disappointment was to discover that that wallpaper had started to peel off of its own accord and had actually been painted over by Liz Truss.

"So I will be saying to my children: scratch over there, there’s gold in them walls."

His comments sparked an unlikely row over the renovation, as supporters of Ms Truss told The Times she did not even get round to any decorations in Downing Street during her fateful 49 days in power.

However, others who worked on the campaign insisted she had repainted the walls of the flat, while there were separate claims there was not even any gold wallpaper in the first place.

At the same awards ceremony, Sir Keir Starmer won the coveted politician of the year award.
