Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8973 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0916 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1145 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9161 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Tory MP Jonathan Gullis attacks bishops for ‘using the pulpit to preach from’

A Tory MP has launched an attack on Church of England bishops – and is facing mockery after he said they should stop "using the pulpit to preach from".

It comes after the prelates criticised the government's plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda and said the idea should "shame us as a nation".

When the bishop's criticism was put to him he replied: "I don't think unelected bishops in the House of Lords should be preaching about politics.

"And I sadly think that too many people are using the pulpit to preach from."
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rwanda-deport-jonathan-gullis-bishops-pulpit-preach-b2248192.html

Perhaps he agrees with Starmer that the House of Lords should be abolished, they're all unelected.

Irmgard Furchner: Nazi typist guilty of complicity in 10,500 murders

A former secretary who worked for the commander of a Nazi concentration camp has been convicted of complicity in the murders of more than 10,505 people.

Irmgard Furchner, 97, was taken on as a teenaged typist at Stutthof and worked there from 1943 to 1945.

Furchner, one of the few women to be tried for Nazi crimes in decades, was given a two-year suspended jail term.

Although she was a civilian worker, the judge agreed she was fully aware of what was going on at the camp.

When the trial began in September 2021, Irmgard Furchner went on the run from her retirement home and was eventually found by police on a street in Hamburg.

Camp survivor... Manfred Goldberg, said his only disappointment was that the two-year suspended sentence "appears to be a mistake".

"No-one in their right mind would send a 97 year old to prison, but the sentence should reflect the severity of the crimes," he said.

"If a shoplifter is sentenced to two years, how can it be that someone convicted for complicity in 10,000 murders is given the same sentence?"

Watch: Lionel Messi nearly hit by overhead cable during Argentina's open-top bus celebration

Lionel Messi was inches away from being knocked off the back of an open-top bus after returning to Argentina with the World Cup.

Messi and four team-mates, including Leandro Paredes and Angel Di Maria, were at the back of the bus in Buenos Aires when it passed under an overhead power line. Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo De Paul noticed the cable with a moment to spare and told his team-mates to duck.

Footage of the players' near-miss shows the cable knocking off one player's baseball cap. Messi, who was holding the World Cup trophy at the time, seemed to laugh off the incident.

Thunderbird 102.6.1 is a security update

Users of the open source email client Thunderbird may want to fire up the update engine of the application to install the latest update for the program. Thunderbird 102.6.1 is a security update that also addresses non-security issues.

The update is already available. Existing Thunderbird users may select Menu > Help > About Thunderbird to run a check for updates. The email client should pick up the update and install it automatically at that point. The new version should be 102.6.1 after the update.
https://www.ghacks.net/2022/12/20/thunderbird-102-6-1-is-a-security-update/

Linux version arriving shortly. If you don't use Thunderbird it's like MS Outlook (was? - long time since I used it), easy to feed Yahoo / Gmail email through it.

https://www.thunderbird.net

Edit: If you have more than one Gmail / Yahoo account you can feed them all through Thunderbird, which might make life that bit easier. You just need to be careful when sending emails (via drop-down menu) to ensure you send from the one you want it to be sent from.

Bury: Police appeal after dog owner throws cat on ground in car park

A cat has been left with a series of potentially life-changing injuries after being viciously attacked by a dog owner near her home earlier this month.

... on Monday, December 5 at around 11pm, CCTV has captured a dog owner dragging Lola from under a car on the car park on Brookshaw Street/Lathom Street and then throwing her on the ground

Following the incident, Lola may suffer brain damage and lose an eye with a number of emergency vet treatments set to happen.

As well as possible brain damage and eye damage, she had blood coming from her mouth and ears, bruising on her stomach, painful and stiff back legs and snapped teeth.

Vets questioned the plausibility of a dog attack after finding no puncture marks.

Police had originally discovered a man and his dog standing over the unconscious cat.

The man reportedly ran away after giving a false name and address, leaving the dog at the scene.

With vet bills costing more than £1,400, single mum Tracy said it is something she has struggled to pay for and ultimately had to rule out the £2,500 brain scan due to the cost and Lola's age, which would have posed surgical risks.

A GoFundMe crowdfunding page has been set up here to help Tracy with the costs but she has said it isn't about the finances, it is about catching the man who did this to her cat before he does it to another animal.

Brief CCTV video in link. That bloke should be humanely put down. Prison sentence would be a waste of public money. JMO.

Cat rescue's advice on outdoor shelters - materials to avoid

A Bradford cat rescue has issued a warning to people looking after outdoor cats and strays this winter.

The recent cold snap has sparked concern about well-intentioned people leaving blankets, towels, beds and hay as shelter for cats living outside.

Bradford Cat Watch Rescue and Sanctuary said these materials can absorb moisture from the air and freeze solid.

It means cats could fall asleep and freeze to death.

The rescue’s founder Katie Lloyd has urged people to use straw inside outdoor shelters for cats during the colder months.

The dry leftover stalks from straw helps repel moisture in the air. People should loosely pack straw in the cat’s shelter.

If you're worried about a stray cat's health, you can dial the RSPCA’s emergency helpline via 0300 1234 999.
