Καλά Χριστούγεννα

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9089 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0952 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1002 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9131 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

April 9 is the most likely election date

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to decide the final date for the first of what is almost certain to be a double election over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, with April 9 increasingly looming as the most likely date.

Mitsotakis and his closest aides believe that choosing April 9 presents a number of advantages: It cannot be considered an early election, even though the ruling conservative New Democracy’s four-year term does not expire until July 7, yet it is early enough not to allow what is expected to be a polarized, even poisonous political clash to drag into the summer.

Also, April 9 avoids an election coinciding with the university entrance exams in June, since a second election, if necessary, will then take place in May.

The date, before Easter, will allow the hundreds of thousands of big-city residents, mostly in Athens and Thessaloniki, who nonetheless vote in their constituencies of origin, to combine voting with their Easter vacations. Ruling party officials consider that a higher turnout would favor them.

By early April, the public will also begin to feel the impact on the number of measures on their pocket.

Dog starts house fire after turning on hairdryer

A dog is believed to have caused a fire in a house on Christmas Eve after accidentally turning a hairdryer on.

Essex Fire Service said crews were called to Hockley, Essex, following reports of a smoke-filled house.

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire after locating it in the bedroom.

The dog was waiting by the front door when the homeowner returned and both were treated for smoke inhalation, the service said.

'Heart-in-a-jar' could hold key to stopping cardiac arrest among sport stars

A working mini human “heart-in-a-jar” built in a lab could help stop footballers suffering cardiac arrest on the pitch.

Scientists have long questioned why some of the healthiest hearts in the world, in athletes at the peak of their powers, suddenly stop working with no warning.

A team of researchers at AstraZeneca, working with a company called Novoheart, have created a heart in a jar the size of a fingertip, which is able to contract and is made from real human cells, in order to study the most common cause of heart failure, known as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction accounts for around a half of all heart failure cases and these patients have difficulty pumping blood because their heart is scarred.

Airports running ‘better than usual’ in ‘embarrassing’ blow to Border Force strikes

Passengers have said they wish the Army could man the borders permanently after airports ran smoothly on Friday in an “embarrassing” blow to striking Border Force workers.

As the union warned that the strikes could go on for months, the Ministry of Defence said members of the Armed Forces would get a £20 bonus for every day they spend training or deployed during the festive period.

Soldiers standing in for striking Border Force staff ‘lack power to detain suspected criminals’

The military personnel drafted in to plug the gaps left at British airports by striking Border Force staff are unable to detain travellers they suspect of criminal activity, leaked emails suggest.

The government, which has offered Border Force staff a 2 per cent pay rise, has sought to minimise disruption – and effectively undermine the strikers’ bargaining power – by taking the unusual step of drafting in members of the military at ports and airports.

But as the PCS threatens that the strikes could last six months, with a “huge escalation” in January, leaked correspondence seen by The Guardian between Royal Navy and Home Office officials reveal that the government’s chosen stand-ins lack the necessary training to perform essential duties.

The newspaper quotes the emails as saying members of the armed forces currently stationed at passport booths do not have the training required to detain people suspected of crimes such as carrying a false passport, drug smuggling or people trafficking, so long as they hold valid travel documents.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka told the paper: “The government has boasted there are no queues at passport control, but of course there are no queues if no one’s being stopped."

Earlier this week, it emerged that the troops drafted in to assist as thousands of paramedics took industrial action would not be allowed to break the speed limit, run traffic lights or turn on their vehicle’s blue lights when driving.

Meanwhile, the head of the British Armed Forces has warned that the military must not be treated as “spare capacity”.

Pub-crawling Santas block Cornish road after getting tank stuck in hedge
Cars stuck for two hours in festive spectacle caused by group reported to be military re-enactors

The armoured vehicle full of Santas was spotted by amused bystanders in multiple locations throughout the day, including St Ives and Helston, in what appears to be an annual adventure.

But their choice of transport ultimately proved itself to be less deft than the reindeer-led chariot of St Nicholas, as the group eventually had to be freed by police after getting stuck in a hedge and accidentally blocking off a road.

Perhaps they were tanked up?

Edgware: Man arrested after woman dies in Christmas Day crash

A man has been arrested after a woman was killed in a crash in the early hours of Christmas Day.

At about 03:45 GMT, patrolling Met police officers in a marked car indicated for a car to stop in Hendon Way, Edgware, north London.

The car drove off and police did not pursue it. The car was then involved in a crash with another vehicle and hit a lamp-post.

The 22-year-old, who was a passenger in the second car, died from her injuries.

The driver of the second car - a man - suffered a non-serious head injury.

Police said the occupants of the car that did not stop for officers fled the scene on foot.

A 29-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.
