Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9072 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0917 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1023 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9160 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Brexit: thousands of Britons expelled from EU since end of transition period
More than 2,250 UK nationals ordered to leave bloc between January 2021 and September 2022

Quarterly data published late last month by Eurostat shows a total of 2,285 UK nationals were expelled from 1 January 2021, when British citizens lost their free movement rights within the EU, until the third quarter of last year.

Experts cautioned that the data did not specify why people were ordered to leave so not all expulsions may have been related to residency rules, but said the figures amounted to “the starkest possible reminder” of the consequences of Brexit.

“British citizens are now third-country nationals in the EU and those who are not covered by the withdrawal agreement are subject to domestic immigration laws,” said Prof Michaela Benson of Lancaster University.

The Eurostat data... showed striking variations between EU member states, with Sweden accounting for nearly half (1,050) of all British citizens ordered to leave over the period and the Netherlands almost a third (615).

Malta told 115 UK nationals to leave its territory, France 95, Belgium 65, Denmark 40, Germany 25 and Austria 10, while some countries with large populations of British residents, including Spain, Portugal and Italy, reported no expulsion orders.

Didn't see a mention of Greece but I suspect few, if any, have been expelled as such.

Coming to a farm near you... the world’s first manure-powered tractor
British firm unveils the eco-friendly New Holland T7, which it claims can give diesel counterparts a run for their money

The world’s first manure-powered tractor has been unveiled by a British firm in a move that could prompt a green revolution on farms.

The New Holland T7 tractor is fuelled by farm slurry that would see farms become “energy independent” and “carbon neutral”.

Bennamann, its Cornish maker, claimed that the tractor matches the performance standards of its diesel alternative, at a time when the Government places mounting pressure on farms to decarbonise.

The 270bhp tractor is powered by capturing the methane that would otherwise escape from cow manure – called “fugitive methane” – then treating and compressing the gas for use as liquid fuel. Its cryogenic fuel tank keeps the methane as a liquid at -162C.

The technology has the potential to combat climate change by removing large amounts of methane from the atmosphere.

Virginia shooting: Boy, 6, shoots teacher in US classroom

A 6-year-old student is in police custody after he shot and wounded a teacher inside a classroom in Virginia in the US on Friday.

No students were injured in the shooting at Richneck Elementary School in the city of Newport News, police said.

The teacher, a woman in her 30s, suffered life-threatening injuries. Her condition had improved somewhat by late afternoon, Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said. “We did not have a situation where someone was going around the school shooting,” Drew told reporters, later claiming that the gunshot was not an accident. Drew said the student and teacher had known each other in a classroom setting.

He said the boy had a handgun in the classroom, and investigators were trying to figure out where he obtained it.

CCTV captures moment BMW destroys shop

The car was driven into the Alan Fish Ltd shop on Canterbury Street, Ashton-under-Lyne on Thursday 5 January.

The driver, a woman, managed to escape from the vehicle and was checked over by paramedics.

She was later arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken into police custody but has since been released under investigation.

The footage shows the car smashing through the wall of the electrical shop, seconds later the external wall falls and crumbles to the ground. Residents can then be seen running to help.

Shop owner Alan Fish said it was the second time a car had been driven into his store in just four months.

Crimes against croissants have reached epidemic levels across the UK
Up and down the country, you will find these blameless baked goods tormented with ingredients that have no business being anywhere near them

In the end it was a French journalist, Julien Hoez, who decided that enough was enough. Visiting the UK, Monsieur Hoez found himself in a branch of Cawa Coffee, a small chain of cafés. There he saw something that horrified him. A pile of croissants, each one sliced in half and stuffed with three fish fingers, tartare sauce, and slices of cheese.

Never been a fan of the pastry in UK croissants but do rather like Greek croissants and 7 Days can be found in many UK supermarkets:

X marks the spot: newly released treasure map sparks hunt for £15m Nazi hoard
Second world war document revealing a stash of coins and jewels hidden by German soldiers is put online by Dutch archivists

As the Nazis fled occupied Europe in the final days of the second world war, four German soldiers buried a hoard of gold coins and jewels in the middle of nowhere in the Dutch countryside. Nearly 80 years later, hopes of finding the buried loot have been raised after the National Archives of the Netherlands released a trove of documents – and a map to the treasure where X marks the spot.

The treasure – four ammunition cases laden with coins, watches, jewellery, diamonds and other gemstones – is thought to have been worth at least 2m or 3m Dutch guilder in 1945, the equivalent of around £15.85m in today’s money.

Joost Rosendaal, an assistant professor in history at Radboud university in Nijmegen, told the Observer that looting was common on both sides. In October 1944 at least five banks in Arnhem were looted by German soldiers. After the liberation in April 1945, another was robbed by troops in British uniforms, a group that included one Dutchman serving in the South Wales Borderers.

Allegedly work has begun on a solution to the narrow entrance to Poros on the Skala road by the memorial to the HMS Perseus (red line on map). An existing track is being surfaced to allow two one-way streets, according to locals.

Road works seem to have been completed, now we'll have to see how it works out.
