Kef fire risk 04/07/22: High

Fifty four new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, three on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8925 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0738 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1204 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9313 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Masks may come back as infections rise, says EODY

Increased movement as the holiday season kicks into gear and a relaxed attitude among young people aged 18-24 appear to be the main factors driving the upward trend in coronavirus infections, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said on Monday.

...the biggest increases in cases have been seen on the islands of the Ionian and southern Aegean and in Crete, but also in the Greek capital.

...the expert committee advising the government will be making a recommendation for masks to become mandatory in all indoor public settings like supermarkets and stores.

Eiffel Tower riddled with rust and in need of repair, leaked reports say

When it was completed in 1889, the Eiffel Tower – Paris’s Iron Lady – was expected to last 20 years before being dismantled. Today, 133 years on, the tower is still standing, less by design than through diligent maintenance.

Now, however, confidential reports leaked to the French magazine Marianne suggest the monument is in a bad way and riddled with rust. The tower needs a full repair, it is claimed, but instead it is being given only a cosmetic makeover for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The Most Expensive and Cheapest Areas in Greece to Buy Property

The price of properties in Greece has increased to unprecedented levels in 2022 with the Athens Riviera and the Cyclades leading the post-COVID recovery of the real estate market.

According to Spitogatos the leading app used in Greece to search for real estate, the southern suburbs of Athens are the most expensive areas to buy property.

The Cyclades is the second most expensive area to buy property in Greece. The price has risen by 6.9 percent in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year. The average home in the Cyclades costs 2,887 euros per square meter, making the region the second most expensive in Greece.

Mykonos and Santorini are the most expensive islands to buy property in the Cyclades.

Unsurprisng: there's a high demand for property on Kef, especially along the south coast area and around Fiskardo.

Leaders of Argostoli municipality don't want to be caught fiddling while Kef burns and have successfully applied for funding from the 'Anti-Nero' program run by the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Some 245 acres of woodland are to be cleaned and dead wood removed, principally 178 acres in the transitional zone between Argostoli and woodland. Also to be cleaned are 55 acres in and around Kastro, 8.5 acres in Pessada and 3.5 in Svoronata.

52 forest fires in last 24 hours

A total of 52 forest fires broke out in the 24-hour period to 6 p.m., the Fire Service said on Monday, warning that the threat of fires remains very high for Tuesday in many regions.

Strong winds and high temperatures on Tuesday means the fire risk remains very high in Attica, Central Greece, Western Greece, the Peloponnese and the eastern Aegean islands, he said, urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid all careless and negligent activity.

Brexit: No case for UK returning to EU, Labour leader Starmer says

There is "no going back" from the UK's exit from the EU, Labour's leader has said, ahead of a speech aimed at attacking the government's record on Brexit.

Sir Keir Starmer told the BBC a Labour government would not rejoin the EU and instead seek to "make Brexit work".

Keir Starmer concedes that hard Brexit is irreversible

There are three big questions about Sir Keir Starmer's "five point plan to make Brexit work".
First is whether it makes sense economically: will it help return the UK to growth?
Second will it impress the EU, and is there any chance that what Starmer wants will be agreed by EU leaders?
Finally, does it make sense politically, will it reinforce support for the Labour Party?

In an interview this afternoon, I probed Starmer on all this, and didn't emerge much wiser.

Will there be a heatwave in July as computer models suggest 40ºC temperatures for UK

If you follow social media, or read the tabloids, you won't have failed to miss the headlines over the past few days that a tropical heatwave is on the way for the UK next week.

So is this true, and how hot is it going to get?

Some publications are reporting a UK high of 40ºC around the 16 July.

This is because one of our supercomputer models on Saturday, 2 July - for the first time ever - brought up a scenario where parts of the UK could get a high of 41ºC later next week.

If this happened - it's not likely to - it would be unprecedented.

UK councils and hospitals at risk of cyber hackers, ITV News reveals

An ITV News investigation into cyber security at public services has revealed an enormous disparity in defence budgets, hundreds of potential website vulnerabilities and the email addresses and passwords of staff at one council posted in full online.

These services are crucial for the smooth running of day-to-day life in Britain and hold swathes of your sensitive data.

Exclusive figures show that one council in Britain is spending just £32,000 a year on cyber security.

In comparison, another council - with a smaller population - has an annual budget of £1,000,000, a difference of more than 30 times.

One hospital sets aside just £10,000 a year towards cyber security.

The names of the public institutions involved are being withheld, to avoid turning them into targets.

Ciaran Martin, former head of the National Cyber Security Centre, believes that around three-quarters of cyber crime comes from within Russia and that it is “tolerated by the Russian government”. Attacks against public services in the UK have also been blamed on hackers from North Korea and criminal gangs.

One of the most common forms of attack is ransomware, a type of software which demands payment - usually in bitcoin - or deletes the systems it has infected. UK policy is for public services not to pay the ransom.

Tennis fan I'm not but, as they've been in the news recently, here's their background:

Stefanos Tsitsipas: was born in Athens. His father is Greek and his mother is Russian. His maternal grandfather, Sergei Salnikov, was a Soviet footballer who played for Zenit Leningrad, Spartak Moscow and Dynamo Moscow. Wikipedia

Nick Kyrgios: was born in Canberra, Australia, to a father of Greek origin and a Malay mother, Norlaila. His father is a self-employed house painter, and his mother is a computer engineer. His mother was born in Malaysia as a member of the Selangor royal family, but she dropped her title as a princess when she moved to Australia in her twenties. Wikipedia
