Kef fire risk 09/07/22: Medium

One hundred and forty one new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, seven on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8766 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0485 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1408 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9537 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Police called to ‘large pigeon’ stranded on roof - and find it’s a dog

Police were called by alarmed neighbours on Thursday to a large pigeon stranded on a roof - only for them to find it was a dog.

The French Bullmastiff had somehow got itself on top of the house in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire.

What payouts do ministers receive when they leave office?

WHAT WAS CLAIMED
Ministerial departures that caused Boris Johnson to announce his resignation will lead to a total bill to the taxpayer of £423,000.

OUR VERDICT
This may turn out to be true, but it is too early to say. Those who resigned will not receive a payout if they return to a paid job in government within three weeks, as some have said they will, or wish to.

WHAT WAS CLAIMED
The Prime Minister is not entitled to a ministerial severance payment on leaving office.

OUR VERDICT
Incorrect. The Prime Minister is entitled to this payment.

Nearly half a million more adults on antidepressants in England

Nearly half a million more adults in England are now taking antidepressants compared with the previous year, according to NHS figures.

The number of prescriptions for children and teenagers has also risen.

The data found women were also twice as likely to be prescribed antidepressants as men.

That's de... definitely not surprising.

Minor drama southwest of Fiskardo yesterday when the Svea, a Netherlands flagged yacht, suffered mechanical failure resulting in inability to control it. A coast guard patrol boat escorted the yacht into Fiskardo port where it was confined to port until a new certificate of seaworthiness issued. No injuries or marine pollution observed.

I can't see the whole article as it's behind a paywall.
But I clearly remember when Pension Contracting Out become the thing to do - or so the various insurance companies of the day would have us believe - I endured several presentations at the oil co. I then worked for.
Slick salesmen extolling the benefits of Contracting Out to their schemes, the big sell being the additional Tax Relief on such payments.

So, whilst State Pensions are affected by whether you Contracted Out or not, if you did, you'll have an income from that additional pension scheme too.

Priti Patel’s plan to end Channel crossings in disarray as Navy threatens to ‘walk away’
Official figures reveal that number of refugees crossing in small boats has doubled since military brought in

The Royal Navy is threatening to “walk away” from Boris Johnson and Priti Patel’s plan to stem the number of boats carrying asylum seekers across the Channel as official data shows how spectacularly the policy has backfired.

Defence chiefs are said to be fed up with trying to enact the prime minister and home secretary’s rapidly imploding plan of using the military to control small boats in the Channel.

Ministry of Defence data shows crossings have close to doubled since the military was given “primacy” over the issue from mid-April compared with the first three months of this year.

Patel and Johnson were warned that deploying the Royal Navy would be likely to increase the number of crossings but ignored expert advice because, according to internal sources, they wanted to appear tough.

One former defence minister told the Observer that their miscalculation had guaranteed the navy was effectively providing an “efficient taxi service” for asylum seekers.

So whether anyone's better off for opting out or not depends on how well the pension fund was invested. I presume.

New wave ‘most contagious’

The latest wave of the coronavirus epidemic in Greece is the “most contagious yet,” according to Professor of Pulmonology and Vice President of the Hellenic Respiratory Society Nikos Tzanakis.

He noted that the BA.5 subvariant of the Omicron strand of Covid-19 is transmitted at an extremely rapid pace and has “strong symptoms,” though this is not causing alarm.
