Kef fire risk 12/07/22: Medium

-- new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, -- on Ithaka. No figures made available

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8708 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0401 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1484 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9614 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

MPs approve controversial plans to let agency workers cover for striking staff

The Conservative MP Alec Shelbrooke voted against the plans, arguing that they diminish the intended impact of industrial action.

“If people are going to lose their ability to have an effect when they withdraw their labour, then I am afraid they have effectively lost the ability to withdraw their labour,” the Elmet and Rothwell MP said.

This was the first time Shelbrooke had voted against the government since being elected in 2010.

Sir Mo Farah reveals he was trafficked to the UK as a child

Sir Mo Farah was brought to the UK illegally as a child and forced to work as a domestic servant, he has revealed.

The Olympic star has told the BBC he was given the name Mohamed Farah by those who flew him over from Djibouti. His real name is Hussein Abdi Kahin.

He was flown over from the east African country aged nine by a woman he had never met, and then made to look after another family's children, he says.

Sir Mo says he wants to tell his story to challenge public perceptions of trafficking and slavery.

"I had no idea there was so many people who are going through exactly the same thing that I did. It just shows how lucky I was," he says.

"What really saved me, what made me different, was that I could run."

Cars hit pack of wild boars in Greece; 2 killed, 4 injured

A three-car pileup caused by a pack of wild boars in northern Greece killed two people and left four more hospitalized, police said Tuesday.

The accident happened shortly before midnight Monday on a two-lane road about 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Thessaloniki.

A patrol car carrying three police officers slammed into the pack of boars and veered off course; a few seconds later, a second vehicle hit the pack, tipped over and landed in a nearby field.

A third vehicle then slammed into the patrol car, killing the 53-year-old driver of that car and a 48-year-old passenger.

A 50-year-old woman from North Macedonia who was in the second car was injured and was taken to a hospital, along with the three police officers. Authorities said their injuries are not life-threatening. The woman’s husband, who was driving the second vehicle, was not injured.

Five wild boars also died, police said.

Speed limit to be lowered to 20mph in Wales

Speed limits in built-up areas look set to be reduced from 30mph to 20mph in Wales from next year - a UK first that is controversial among some drivers.

Ministers say a 20mph speed limit will lower road collisions and traffic noise and encourage people to walk and cycle.

The slower limit has been divisive in areas where there have been trials with some motorists complaining of more congestion and journeys taking longer.

The proposed new law will be put before a Welsh Parliament vote on Tuesday.

The Welsh Conservatives said the blanket rollout is "ludicrous".

Many UK towns and cities have 20mph limits on residential roads but Wales is to become the first nation to impose it as the default on all restricted roads - with Scotland set to follow suit in 2025.

Labour Party to table motion of no confidence in government as Boris Johnson remains at No 10

Labour will table a no confidence motion in Boris Johnson’s government today, challenging Tory MPs to remove the outgoing prime minister while they hold a leadership contest.

The opposition party are seeking to hold the vote on Wednesday, Labour sources have said.

It will be a tough vote for Tory MPs, many of who have publicly stated that Mr Johnson does not have their support and should leave, but if they vote with Labour they could trigger a general election.
https://www.itv.com/news/2022-07-11/tory-leadership-race-rules-set-out-for-election-of-new-pm-by-5-september

I must be missing something here: Conservative MPs might want BoJo gone but I doubt many want a general election yet, too many bad vibes from BoJo's reign as 'world king'. And if the vote does trigger a general election do Labour think they'll win? Hmmmm.

:dunno:

Beware of Conservative leadership candidates promising tax cuts

And they’re off. The race to become the next leader of the Conservative Party and the next British prime minister is underway. On the steps of Downing Street, Boris Johnson said he is confident his party will elect someone “dedicated” to cutting taxes because, as he put it, “that is the way to generate growth and the income to pay for great public services”.

On Thursday morning, the government’s own forecaster has been arguing that the evidence demonstrates the opposite is true. According to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), tax cuts leave the public finances in a worse position.

Allegedly the small 'tourist port' of Agia Pelagia in Svoronata has been leased out by Argostoli municipality at auction to a private company until 2036. Figure I've heard quoted is 30,500 euros per annum. Can't see how they'll make any money on that / what the charges will have to be to make any money.  As well as the lease fee the company is required to finish off the project and make good any repairs needed since it was built, between 2003-2010.

Wonder if there's any similar plan for Katelios fishing shelter?

MPs approve controversial plans to let agency workers cover for striking staff

How mant days ago was Grant Schapps castigating P&O for replacing salaried staff with agency workers?
But more to the point, what about the promised penalties and new legislation to prevent it?!
