Kef fire risk 13/07/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8737 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0343 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1446 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9668 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

The low-cost airline that’s riling readers with last-minute cancellations and useless vouchers

Having a flight cancelled at the last minute is a two-pronged problem. First, there is the task of sorting out your plans to ensure your holiday can still go ahead. Second is the small matter of securing a refund for the lost flight, and possible compensation for the inconvenience.

When it comes to customers of Wizz Air, the latter obstacle is proving particularly troublesome, with many facing long waits and eye-watering phone bills after attempting to contact the no-frills carrier’s customer service team.

UK government to table no-confidence motion in itself
Unexpected move does not directly criticise Boris Johnson and comes after Labour version rejected

The government is to table a confidence motion in itself after rejecting a version by Labour that directly criticised Boris Johnson.

The unexpected move will force Conservative MPs to back the government but will make the vote more straightforward as it will not constitute an endorsement of the prime minister.

Labour reacted with fury on Tuesday night when Downing Street refused to allow parliamentary time for the motion it had tabled. Longstanding convention is that if the leader of the official opposition tables a motion of no confidence, the government makes time for it to be debated and voted on.

Tory whips said Labour’s motion fell outside the scope of the convention by identifying Johnson. However, Labour said the motion had been ruled in order by the House of Commons clerks. It pointed to the 1965 confidence motion, which mentioned the prime minister.

Flawed online safety bill is disaster for free speech, claim Tories

The free-speech wing of the Conservative party is lining up against the “fundamentally misdesigned” online safety bill as the government rushes to pass the legislation before the House of Commons breaks up for the summer.

The backbencher David Davis said of the flagship bill: “We all want the internet to be safe. Right now, there are too many dangers online, from videos propagating terror to posts promoting self-harm and suicide.

“But the bill’s well-intentioned attempts to address these very real risks threatens being the biggest accidental curtailment of free speech in modern history.”

Tory MP Tobias Ellwood’s home attacked after he allegedly ran over cat

Police were called after the home of Tobias Ellwood was vandalised after the Conservative MP was alleged to have run over and killed a valuable Bengal cat – then reportedly drove off without stopping.

The MP was hailed as a hero in 2017 for trying to save the life of a police officer who was stabbed during the Westminster terror attack. But he is now in disgrace with some of his constituents after the family who owned the cat were allegedly left cradling their dying pet as the MP drove away.

However, a neighbour, who asked not to be named, said there was a simple reason why Ellwood did not stop, saying: “Apparently he didn’t know he had done it till afterwards.”

Greece Will Protect Greek Heritage Of Ukrainian City Of Odessa

Greece is keen to protect the Greek heritage of the Ukrainian city of Odessa said Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias speaking to reporters on Tuesday, noting that every effort will be made to protect the city and its Hellenic cultural heritage  from the repercussions of the war.

He pointed out that the building in which the Greek Revolution started was in Odessa and owned by the Greek state, while Greece was also linked to Odessa via the Opera House, which had been built when the city’s mayor was Grigorios Maraslis, an ethnic Greek who had been one of Greece’s great benefactors.

Three located after fire-fightling helicopter crashes off Samos

Three of the four missing crew members from a fire-fightling helicopter that crashed off the island of Samos have been located, the coast guard has said.

Among the three is the Romanian pilot, who has been taken to hospital.

The health status of the other two crew members is unclear.

The Soviet-made Mil Mi-8 medium twin-turbine helicopter took off from Samos at 4.39 p.m. with one Romanian and two Moldovan nationals, as well as a Greek translator, and fell into the sea at 5.55 p.m., it said.

A second Mi-8 and a Coast Guard vessel were searching the area for the other man.
