Kef fire risk 15/07/22: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8710 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0305 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1481 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9704 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Unite warns of 'summer of discontent' over pay

The general secretary of the UK's biggest private sector union has warned of a 'summer of discontent' over pay.

Sharon Graham said there could be hundreds of disputes involving tens of thousands of people if workers are made to "pay the price for inflation".

She said employers making a profit from workers should pay them a "proper fair wage".

There was a ‘nasty, misogynistic’ No 10 culture – but officials aren’t blaming Boris Johnson
In response to ITV documentary, Downing Street spokesman claims outgoing PM had to ‘carry the can for bad behaviour of others’

A former employee at Number 10, who worked closely with the Prime Minister for a number of years, told the documentary that his arrival at Downing Street brought with it “a very masculine culture”, adding: “If you were a female in that sort of zone, it’s actually quite uncomfortable to work in.”

The source also claimed Mr Johnson “was completely disorganised” and would “never read his notes”, adding: “First thing in the morning, Boris Johnson would turn up two hours late. His hair would be wet. He’d have his zip undone or his shirt hanging out. He’d be just a complete mess all the time.”

The former staffer there “were way more” parties inside Number 10 during lockdown than revealed in Sue Gray’s report, adding: “I think the Prime Minister himself had a few more than what has been reported, privately in his flat as well.”

No amount of alcohol healthy for under-40s but older people ‘may benefit from small amounts,’ study finds
Researchers said that alcohol advice should vary according to age and gender

Drinking more than a small shot glass of beer a day could pose risks to health for men under the age of 40, a study suggests as researchers urged younger adults to steer clear of alcohol.

And a safe daily limit for women aged 39 and under is the equivalent of two tablespoons’ worth of wine, or 100ml of beer, the research suggests.

But those over 40 can toast their health with a drink or two, as academics found a small amount of alcohol can help ward off heart disease, stroke and diabetes among this age group.

Researchers said young people face higher health risks from alcohol consumption than older adults.

Sailing yacht got too close to Skala beach and had to be towed off by tug earlier today. Taken to Argosoli for re-certification of seaworthiness.

It was the Croatian flagged Alessandro and it grounded at Mounda, which makes a lot more sense than getting stuck on Skala beach.

Homeowners sent free Amazon parcels in ‘brushing’ scams

Unassuming homeowners are being deluged with parcels through an Amazon scam carried out by Chinese sellers.

Some people have received hundreds of unsolicited deliveries in “brushing scams” after their addresses and personal data was taken by sellers using Amazon. The complicated scam does not financially affect the recipients.

However, it allows Amazon-based sellers to artificially inflate their sales and ratings on the website. This gives them faux credence and enables them to sell potentially low quality or counterfeit goods, tricking other consumers.

Figures from Fraport: 60% of flights and 67% of arrivals were from the UK.
Obviously the figures don't include arrivals from central Europe arriving by car and ferry.

Covid booster: Will be offered to all over 50s this autumn

Everyone aged 50 and over will be offered a Covid booster vaccine this autumn to top up their immunity and cut their risk of becoming severely ill.

Younger people at high risk from Covid, as well as health and social care staff, will also get the booster.

Drug companies have been developing updated vaccines to tackle newer variants, however, it is still uncertain which vaccine will be used.

Drivers queue for hours at Britain’s cheapest petrol station

The Trago Mills Filling Station in Newton Abbot, Devon, has cut its petrol prices to 164.9p a litre – almost 25p cheaper than the national average of 189.5p, according to the RAC.

Filling up a standard 55-litre tank would cost £90.70 at the station, a £14 saving compared with £104.22 at the average garage.

The Shell petrol station is also selling diesel at 179.9p a litre, more than 17p cheaper than the average 197.5p on national forecourts.

Wholesale petrol prices have fallen in recent weeks and for the past three days have been at 80p per litre or below, down from a peak of 100p, according to motoring body the AA.

However, most petrol stations have failed to pass on the savings to customers and have been accused of profiteering.

MPs approve controversial plans to let agency workers cover for striking staff

How mant days ago was Grant Schapps castigating P&O for replacing salaried staff with agency workers?
But more to the point, what about the promised penalties and new legislation to prevent it?!

Quote
Tesco Plc won a bid to overturn a legal ruling preventing the supermarket giant from using “fire and rehire” tactics, handing a boost to employers looking for ways to cut costs.

The practice, in which companies rehire workers on worse terms, has gained ground recently and came under scrutiny in the UK after P&O Ferries sought to fire hundreds of its crew and replace them with cheaper labor.

The London case was brought on behalf of 42 Tesco workers at two distribution centers who claimed that the grocer was attempting to fire and rehire them on a worse contract, without retained pay. On Friday, appeal judges overturned a lower court order blocking Tesco from dismissing the workers.

The decision could lead to more success for employers attempting to use the fire and rehire tactic.

Couple of videos of yesterday's scrub fire at the Agios Konstantinos area of Davgata. If you're short of time watch the first three minutes of first video, shows how quickly a fire spreads from something about the size of a bonfire. If you watch both videos you can see how quickly and how far it can spread in twenty minutes:
