Kef fire risk 28/07/22: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8666 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0457 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1539 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9563 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Owning cat while pregnant linked to increased risk of postpartum depression, study finds
Scientists have claimed that the type of pet expectant mothers own could have an impact on maintaining their mental health following their child’s birth

Owning a cat while pregnant has been linked to an increased risk of postpartum depression in a new study – which also found the reverse to be true for dog ownership.

The researchers at Japan’s University of Toyama were unable to explain the association they discovered between cat ownership and a heightened risk of mental health issues in new mothers.

But the paper’s lead author Kenta Matsumura said the findings suggested that special attention must be paid to cat owners, who are also at a higher risk of toxoplasmosis – an infection which can cause miscarriage or stillbirth in some cases.

Greece rolls out red carpet for crown prince, as Khashoggi killing falls off agenda
With Europe grappling with an energy crisis, Mohammed bin Salman finds he is once again welcome

Smiles, handshakes, backslaps and the Acropolis all to himself. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has landed in Europe – his first trip west since the brutal killing of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi – and on a continent jittering with energy worries, the Saudi royal has received red-carpet treatment.

Human rights concerns aside, the de facto leader of the world’s greatest oil producer has luxuriated in a welcome that only recently may have seemed impossible.

Three years after Khashoggi’s murder, Greece made clear this week that politicians would rather talk about energy than the star journalist dismembered by Saudi agents in Istanbul.

Kefalonia: Argostoli Archaeological Museum Set to Undergo Reconstruction

The building that houses the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli on the Greek island of Kefalonia will soon undergo a deep reconstruction, the Greek Culture Ministry recently announced.

It is reminded that the museum had stopped operations in 2014 after suffering extensive damage due to a strong earthquake that hit the island.

Approved by the ministry’s Museum Council, one of the main parts of the reconstruction plan is the expansion of the museum’s interior areas.

Animal welfare faces ‘clear and present danger’ from post-Brexit trade deals, study warns
Claim that UK farming at risk if ‘soft’ approach pursued with countries with ‘less qualms’ about quality

The UK’s high animal welfare standards face a “clear and present danger” from post-Brexit trade deals without tougher government rules, a study is warning.

Domestic farming will be undercut if the “soft” approach of the Australia and New Zealand negotiations continues in talks with countries with “less qualms” about quality, it argues.

The alarm is raised over a hoped-for agreement with India – which Boris Johnson has promised will be struck in October – because it “has many animal rights practices prohibited at home”.

Labour ‘could face bankruptcy’ as unions revolt after minister sacked for picketing

Sir Keir Starmer has been warned that Labour could face bankruptcy as unions abandon the party after he sacked a shadow minister for appearing on a picket line.

The Labour leader is facing backlash from several major union barons, who say he has severed the historical link between the party and the union movement.

I downloaded and tried the app but, as others report on Google Play, if your AFM (VAT number) indicates you are not a Greek citizen then your attempts to use it are rejected.

I was wondering along those lines... most Brits in Greece won't have a Greek ID card and possibly still haven't converted to a Greek driving licence, so not much use to 'em.
