Kef fire risk 02/08/22: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8621 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0540 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1600 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9488 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Greece to erect bust of Vietnamese revolutionary Ho Chi Minh

Greece will erect a bust honoring Vietnamese communist revolutionary and statesman Ho Chi Minh, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias announced on Monday from the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, where is he is on an official visit.

“Let me tell you a little-known fact about the two countries. President Ho Chi Minh, the founder of Vietnam, fought on the Macedonian Front from 1916 to 1917 while serving in the French army,” he told reporters. “We, therefore, agreed that a bust of him should be erected in Edessa to highlight this fact,” he continued.

The two ministers also agreed that the ashes of Kostas Sarantidis (1927-2021), a Greek soldier who fought with the Vietnamese resistance during the First Indochina War, be transferred to Vietnam.

The old back road between Vlakhata - Agios Gerasimos has been re-surfaced, should be an easier drive now.

Swimmer ‘attacked by shark’ while snorkelling off Cornwall coast

A swimmer has been bitten by a shark in an extremely rare attack off the British coast.

The victim, reportedly a woman, was snorkeling in water around Cornwall when the attack happened.

Authorities said they are believed to have suffered a leg injury from a suspected shark bite.

The incident took place last Thursday off the coast near Penzance.

Shark attacks are incredibly rare in the UK. Only a handful of other shark attacks are thought to have taken place in the UK since the 1800s, according to a database.

The Shark Trust charity says there are only a few types of sharks that could be dangerous to humans and claims none have ever been reported in British waters.

Truss to restore the £21bn pension promise Rishi Sunak broke
Leadership contender would restore the manifesto pledge that Rishi Sunak suspended

Liz Truss will uphold the state pension triple-lock in a spending commitment that will cost taxpayers £21bn over three years.

The Tory leadership contender will honour the Conservative 2019 manifesto commitment as Prime Minister, the Telegraph understands.

Rival candidate and former Chancellor Rishi Sunak suspended the pledge in a move that left pensioners with a 3.1pc pay rise while inflation rocketed to more than 9pc.

The lock – a key Conservative Party policy – ensures that state pensions rise by the highest of inflation, wage growth or 2.5pc each year.

The commitment to restore and protect the triple-lock in a period of high inflation will cost taxpayers an extra £21bn until the next general election, calculations by broker Interactive Investor show.

Next year's triple-lock rise would cost taxpayers £865 per pensioner, Interactive Investor said. With 12.4 million retirees in the UK, this would total around £10.7bn.
