Kef fire risk 11/08/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8715 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.056 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1474 €UR
$1 USD = 0.947 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

‘Exceptional risk’ wildfires could sweep across Britain this weekend

Wildfires threaten to sweep across parts of the country this weekend after ministers were told of an “unprecedented” risk to homes and the countryside.

Fire chiefs warned government officials during an emergency meeting on Wednesday that destructive blazes are likely to spread into residential areas in the coming days, fuelled by bone-dry conditions and a strong easterly wind.

The Met Office has raised the Fire Severity Index (FSI), which assesses how easily a blaze could spread, to the highest, “exceptional” level for a stretch of southern England from Nottingham to parts of Sussex and as far West as Abergavenny this Sunday, with temperatures expected to reach 36C.

Prepare for 'load-shedding': the developing world blackouts on their way to Britain

Under plans briefed to top politicians, ministers warned electricity would have to be rationed from the start of 2023 during peak usage times in the morning and the evening, from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 9pm.

Those proposals, from May, gained renewed attention this week amid reports the UK could face blackouts for several days in January if cold weather and gas shortages leave the nation short of energy. One industry source warns the mass shutdown of nuclear plants in France could also threaten energy imports through undersea cables.

On Tuesday, Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi tried to calm public concern.

However, analysts have warned a severe scenario is "highly likely". A recent note from Rabobank said: "What is highly likely is that millions will freeze this winter; or fall into debts to avoid doing so; and the result will be deflationary demand for everything else, along with cost-push price increases for everything; and yet government help will just mean the latter inflation and less of the former."

Radiant Energy Group’s Nelson says load-shedding is likely to have a profound effect on households, particularly if it lasts for long periods.

He says people will learn to always have electronic items fully charged, and will stock up on additional charger packs. They will start getting dressed faster in the morning to stay warm, and may buy electric blankets if they can't fully heat their homes.

"It's a hard way to live and, as a society, Britain hasn't had to do this for a very long time. Tea will become one of the main sources of warm comfort because it doesn't take that much energy to boil a bit of water for tea.

Firefighters ‘won’t be able to answer all calls’ as deadly heatwaves push services to ‘crisis point’

Firefighters have warned they will not be able to attend all call-outs as the second deadly heatwave in weeks stretches services already at “crisis point”.

Senior staff from crews around the country told The Independent that unprecedented demand and a lack of resources meant crews are not properly equipped to respond to the scale of heat-related incidents caused by the climate crisis.

They also raised concerns that drought conditions could hamper their abilities to tackle wildfires if lakes and ponds can no longer be used to access water.

Ryanair boss O'Leary says the era of €10 flights is over

Ryanair won't be offering flights at rock bottom prices any more thanks to the soaring cost of fuel, the budget airline's boss has admitted.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary says the era of the €10 ticket is over.

The airline's average fare would rise from around €40 (£33.75) last year to roughly €50 over the next five years, he told the BBC.

Father and daughter duo solve mystery of neighbour cat killer

A man has admitted killing his neighbours’ cats after a father and daughter turned detective and found bowls of poison-laced tuna in his garden.

Tristian Paul Pearson, 44, of Bargoed in South Wales, lured family pets - Luna and Bailey - into consuming the toxic substance ethylene glycol.

The two cats died shortly after the poisonings took place in early September 2021, when within a week of each other they returned home appearing very unwell.

Pearson pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to protected animals and his eight-month prison sentence was suspended for 18 months.

He was ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work, and disqualified from keeping all animals for a period of five years, a ban which he may not contest for at least four years.

He was also ordered to pay £2,000 in costs.

Bit of a bump in the sea off Skala this morning when a catamaran with ten foreign nationals collided with a small fishing boat with one occupant, an 80 y-o local male who was toppled into the sea. Rescued by another boat, the old guy was taken to Argostoli hospital for a check up. Kef Port Authority to investigate.

Plane makes 'lowest ever' landing at island airport as tourists look on

The airport at Skiathos has a particularly short runway due to the layout of the island, forcing pilots to approach at a lower postion than they would at other landing strips.

A tax officer was injured in Argostoli when he and a colleague were 'escorted' from a restaurant having found it to be avoiding tax by not issuing receipts. Allegedly the tax official tripped and fell necessitating a visit to hospital. Police summoned, restaurant issued with a fine and closed for a month.

A little bit more on that story here:

I gather there's a few variations on a theme doing the rounds, one of which reckons the tax officers were assaulted by a man "unknown" to the female owner's husband but who arrived in the square with him.

 :hmm:

The catamaran is the Israeli flagged Hani, apparently undamaged. The small boat is the Tatiana, semi-submerged after the collision. Both boats now in Poros port awaiting examination and re-certification of seaworthiness.
