Purely personal news - having spent a quiet but pleasant Christmas and New Year in the company of friends two bits of bad news yesterday morning: my eldest brother passed away unexpectedly during the early hours of New Years morning, unconnected but around the same time our landlord's sister passed away in Argostoli. If posts on GGi are a bit erratic for a few days, apologies but I've just got other things on my mind.

Greece: Outbound holiday tourism up 20 percent
The booking rate for Greeks taking their holidays abroad as well as at domestic destinations is reminiscent of the time before the start of the financial crisis.
The president of the Hellenic Association of Travel and Tourism Agents (HATTA), Lyssandros Tsilidis, said that bookings by Greeks for European destinations in the period from Christmas to the Epiphany have risen by about 20 percent from the same time a year earlier. This is the biggest outgoing tourism flow in the last five years, he added.

Very sorry to hear your news, Maik. Kath's brother died at 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve four years ago and it always hangs over the celebration for us.

A 4-year-old Syrian girl was found sheltering from the cold beside her father's body by a farmer in northern Greece who was inspecting his water-pumping station, located some 300 meters from Evros River on the Greek-Turkish border, police reported on Friday.
The man has been identified by papers found on his body as a 32-year-old Syrian national and it is believed he died after making it across the river in treacherous conditions. His young daughter is thought to have remained with his body for at least 10 hours before she was found by the farmer.
