There’s an image doing the rounds online which features a frosty looking Dowager Countess from Downton Abbey. “My dear,” runs the caption, “nobody cares about your Year In Facebook.”

For the blissfully unaware, this is an auto-generated selection of pictures that you’ve uploaded to Facebook over the past 12 months, arranged across a colourful backdrop of balloons and dancing cartoon figures. You’re given the option to tweak it and, should you wish to do so, share your wistful, nostalgic look at 2014 with a load of people who are probably only vaguely interested. So far, so innocuous.

But unfortunately, Facebook’s algorithm chose to place a photograph of the recently deceased daughter of author Eric Meyer at the centre of his Year In Review, surrounded by the dancing figures; it was a wholly unwelcome, inappropriate and painful reminder of a deeply tragic event. He voiced his displeasure on his blog and the internet went ballistic with rage on his behalf.

One of the less complicated aspects of New Year's Eve is the timing: regardless of where you are or who you are with, you know that the most important part of the night is midnight.

Unless you are a tram driver in Manchester.

The northern city's New Year's Eve firework display was delayed for four minutes on Wednesday night because a tram driver pulled into the "fall out" zone where debris from the show could fall.

Video from the evening shows a record crowd of 15,000 people in Piccadilly Gardens counting down to midnight, yet when the moment comes, they are left bemused as there is no "big bang" when the clock strikes twelve.

Lithuania adopted the euro at midnight, New Year’s Eve – on the 15th anniversary of the launch of the single currency in 1999. This is a major achievement for Lithuania and for the euro area.

Lithuanians are, of course, stark raving mad.

The owner obviously didn't carp at the price - he must have thought in the scale of fins it was worth it.   ;)
