Seems Kefalonian Lines Zakynthos I had a minor bump in Kyllini port after arriving from Zakinthos during rough weather yesterday. Confined to port for safety check.

...according to the research by a travel company - could just be a way of getting them a free plug in the press.

Times tables 'to be tested by age 11'

Every pupil in England will be tested on their times tables before leaving primary school, under government plans.

Pupils aged 11 will be expected to know their tables up to 12x12, and will be tested using an "on-screen check".

The checks will be piloted to about 3,000 pupils in 80 primary schools this summer, before being rolled out across the country in 2017.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said maths was a non-negotiable aspect of a good education.

She previously served in Her Majesty's Treasury as Economic Secretary to the Treasury from October 2013 to April 2014 and as Financial Secretary to the Treasury from April to July 2014. Wikipedia

Junior doctor strikes back on as talks fail

Strikes by junior doctors in England are back on after talks with the government have broken down.

A 24-hour walk-out next Tuesday will be followed by a 48-hour strike on 26 January in the contract dispute.

A third day of action will take place in February, the British Medical Association said.

The action is likely to lead to thousands of non-emergency operations and hospital appointments being cancelled in the coming days.

But despite the failure to reach a deal, both sides have already indicated they want to keep negotiating ahead of next week's walk-out.

Back in the Dark Ages when I was at junior school we had times table and spelling tests every Monday morning and woe betide any kid who made more than a couple of mistakes. Good days.

Absolutely Aristarches, education seems to have gone downhill since then. I am dismayed by the spelling on the internet these days.

We quite often have Kath's grandson, Jack, after school.  I've been amazed by how much more homework he's had throughout juniors (er.. Key Stage 2) - than I had at his age.  In fact I don't recall having homework until I was 10.  Some of it is quite difficult, for example having to write about Shakespeare's Macbeth at age 8!  He has also had homework about times tables every week !
