No plan B for objective values

The process for adjusting objective values (property rates used for tax purposes) is fast turning into a fiasco, as it appears unlikely the project can be completed in time, while the Finance Ministry doesn’t seem to have an alternative plan either.

German car-makers have 'blood on their hands' in diesel scandal

Grman car-makers have “blood on their hands” due to rigging diesel exhaust tests which led to the deaths of thousands of Britons, the Government's former chief scientist has said.

Professor Sir David King said it was “simply astonishing” that Volkswagen, BMW and Daimler had performed rigged experiments on monkeys and that such duplicity had caused the deaths of large numbers of people in the UK.

UK mass surveillance programme ruled unlawful as campaigners call for overhaul of 'snooper's charter'

The Government’s mass surveillance programme to collect people's internet activity and phone records has been ruled unlawful by the Court of Appeal.

Judges said the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act (Dripa) 2014 breached EU law as it allowed the data to be harvested for reasons other than fighting serious crime.

It also enabled police and public bodies to authorise their own access, avoiding prior authorisation by a court or independent body.

Parents face arrest if their kids are caught 'sexting', warn police

Parents who sign for mobile phone contracts on behalf of their children are liable for any ‘sexting’ images shared by teenagers, police said today.

A senior detective said police could then raid family homes, seize computers and phones and arrest ‘innocent’ parents as part of their criminal inquiries.

I'm certainly going to boycott the shop until Dave the cat is allowed back. Er... It is 275 miles away, though.  ;)

Our local newsagent had a lovely tabby cat that slept behind the counter. It made going in to pay the paper bill a pleasant experience.

Woman fined £600 and threatened with jail after accidentally putting cardboard box in wrong bin
'My daughter was so upset because she thought Mummy may be spending Christmas behind bars,' says Alison Mapletoft

A woman was given a £600 fine and threatened with jail after she accidentally put a single cardboard box in the wrong bin.

Alison Mapletoft and her family were left "extremely distressed" when an enforcement firm contracted by her local council demanded the money.

When the mother-of-two phoned 3GS, she was told that she faced a prison sentence or a £2,500 fine unless she paid up.
