Engineers’ taxes and contributions to exceed monthly income

From March, tens of thousands of engineers in Greece – from civil engineers to chemical engineers – will have to pay 86 percent of their average monthly takings in social security contributions.

Combined with tax obligations, they must pay more than 113 percent of their monthly income, so an engineer who makes 1,000 euros a month will have to pay 1,135.50 euros in taxes and contributions, and it is uncertain when this state of affairs will end.

Britain’s national parks are a farce: they’re being run for a tiny minority
Dismal, empty and burnt to a crisp – these spaces are not for the benefit of the nation. We need to reclaim and rewild them

Turkey's Erdogan tells crying six-year-old child she would be honoured to die a martyr on live TV

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been criticised for telling a young girl dressed in a military uniform that she would be honoured if she were "martyred" for Turkey.

Mr Erdogan spotted six-year-old Amine Tiras, who wept and saluted as part of the crowd while he delivered a speech at his ruling party's congress in the city of Kahramanmaras on Saturday, and had her brought on stage.

After trying to comfort the girl by kissing her on both cheeks, Mr Erdogan told the crowd: "She has the Turkish flag in her pocket. If she becomes a martyr, God willing, this flag will be draped on her."

Some people were appalled and took to Twitter to criticise the president.

One user said it was the state's duty to protect children, not to "kill" them. Another said: "You don't wish death for a child, you never say: 'God willing."'

Newborn Found Strangled to Death in Trash Container in Athens

The dead infant that was found in a trash container by a vagrant on Monday morning in Petroupolis, Athens, had actually been strangled, according to the coroner’s report.

The coroner’s examination determined that the cause of death of the newborn had been strangulation with the umbilical cord and rope just a few hours before the body was discovered.

Initially, the causes of death were unknown, as area residents who saw the body said the baby’s mouth was full of napkins. The initial forensic examination showed that the napkins were up to the infant’s pharynx.

Hellenic Police is conducting an investigation to locate those responsible.

Tea bags are the largest contributor to unavoidable waste in the UK, generating 370,000 tonnes every year.

Britons drink 165 million cups of tea a day and according to the UK Tea and Infusions Association the vast majority - 96% - of cups drunk are brewed from tea bags.

:yiamas: Sounds like a good reason to drink more wine!

Next week UK supermarkets will be selling PG tips tea bags made with 100% renewable and biodegradable material as PG aim to cut out polypropylene tea bags by the end of the year.

A month ago the Co-op announced it would be selling polypropylene-free own-brand Fairtrade 99 tea bags by the end of the year.

However, the UK Tea and Infusions Association has warned of higher prices for consumers. Story on the Guardian.

normal circumstances, e.g. meat bones, egg shells, pineapple skin, tea bags).

Greece is most popular destination for Germans

Summer bookings to Greece by German holidaymakers were 40 percent higher than a year ago by the end of January, helping the country overtake the Balearic islands as Germans’ most popular holiday destination, Doerte Nordbeck, head of Travel & Logistics Germany at German market researcher GfK, told journalists at a news conference on Wednesday, ahead of the world’s biggest travel fair in Berlin next week.

She cited booking data from travel agencies and online portals.

At the same time Germans’ summer bookings for Turkey have doubled, though are still far from the levels seen a few years ago, GfK said.
