Kef fire risk 12/06/22: Low

Twenty one new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, none on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8822 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1065 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1335 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9038 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Labour ahead of Tories by two points, but Labour’s leader failing to make a personal breakthrough

Boris Johnson makes a better prime minister than Keir Starmer would despite Partygate, the cost of living crisis and the confidence vote in Johnson held by his MPs, according to the latest Observer poll.

Maybe a sign of the economic times: an increase in thefts of small, portable items such as candles, oil and charcoal burners from the Drapano cemetery.

'Soul relief': Bees help mentally ill on Greek island

On a hillside overlooking the azure blue waters of Greece's Leros island harbour, a small group of workers in protective gear are busy smoking beehives.

But these are not ordinary beekeepers. Some of them are patients from the nearby psychiatric hospital, participating in a two-decade project combining therapy with professional fulfilment.

On the fields of the estate, patients care for the bees and cultivate their high-quality diet -- lavender, oregano and other aromatic herbs.

In Lepida, to the south of the port, the employees package and label the honey, and dry the herbs in dedicated rooms inside the psychiatric hospital.

The estate produce is then sold in various locations on the island.

Allegedly a fairly rare event on Kef happened in an Argostoli 'night club' when an argument resulted in a male in mid-twenties being hospitalised off the island for injuries received. Police seeking others involved.

The Queen becomes world's second-longest serving monarch of all time

Queen Elizabeth II has officially become the world's second longest-serving monarch in history.

As of Sunday, the 96-year-old head of state has reigned for 70 years and 126 days.

It means the Queen has overtaken Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned for 70 years and 126 days.

However, Louis XIV of France remains firmly in the top spot, having reigned for 72 years and 110 days from 1643 to 1715.

Er, if today Lizzie has reigned for 70 years and 126 days and King Bhumibol Adulyadej reigned for 70 years and 126 days... she's drawn level, tomorrow she'll be second longest. I just quote this stuff, they do the maths.

US senators reach bipartisan gun control deal after recent mass shootings
Accord offers measured gun curbs, and if enacted would come after years of stalemate as Biden urges lawmakers to get it to his desk

Joe Biden has urged US lawmakers to get a deal on gun reforms to his desk quickly as a group of senators announced a bipartisan framework Sunday responding to last month’s mass shootings.

To the likely disappointment of gun reform advocates – and many American citizens – the proposed deal is a modest breakthrough offering measured gun curbs while bolstering efforts to improve school safety and mental health programs.

It falls far short of tougher steps long sought by President Joe Biden and many Democrats. Even so, if the accord leads to the enactment of legislation, it would signal a turn from years of gun massacres that have yielded little but stalemate in Congress.

In a statement Biden acknowledged the deal’s weaknesses but welcomed and urged quick action.
