Freddie the Thames seal to be put down by vets after dog attack
Seal pup who had taken up residence last month near Hammersmith Bridge was wounded on Sunday

Freddie the seal, who has captured the hearts of Londoners since taking up residence near Hammersmith Bridge last month, is likely to be put down by vets after a dog attack left him with severe wounds.

Vets treating the beloved seal pup said the “only ethical and fair option we have is to end his suffering” after the vicious attack left him with a fractured flipper and an infected wound.

Since arriving upstream on the river a few weeks ago, the pup was nicknamed after Freddie Mercury for his entertaining antics. He was regularly spotted sunbathing on the bank at low tide to the delight of riverside walkers in Barnes, Teddington and Putney.

But the seal was mauled by a brown cross-breed dog as he basked along the Thames tow path on Sunday afternoon.

Deadline looms for 'undocumented' expats in Spain to return to UK under new Brexit rules

A Brexit deadline is looming that could see thousands of Britons who made EU countries their homes forced to return to the UK.

UK nationals who have not been granted residential status or those who arrived after the transition period ended on January 1, will have to return to Britain by March 31.

With the UK no longer an EU-member, British citizens are allowed to live in Schengen countries for up to 90-days in a six-month period without a visa.

This could also affect UK citizens who missed the December 31 deadline to apply for residency.

Experts Say First Pre-Human Lived in Northern Greece-Balkan Area

Researchers have found evidence that the link in the lineage of the great apes and humans took place in the Eastern Mediterranean — not in Africa — and that the first pre-human, or hominin, walked in the Northern Greece-Balkans area, according to research published in the scientific journal PLoS One and ScienceDaily.

Greece to accept test flights from UK next month, says minister

Greece will begin accepting test-run flights from the UK next month, the country’s tourism minister has revealed.

Haris Theoharis said that while Athens’ ambition remained to open up to holidaymakers from 14 May, border controls would also be relaxed in April when “some” airports were allowed to receive traffic from abroad.

Covid: £5,000 fine for people going on holiday abroad

A £5,000 fine for anyone in England trying to travel abroad without good reason is due to come into force next week as part of new coronavirus laws.

The penalty is included in legislation that will be voted on by MPs on Thursday.

Foreign holidays are currently not allowed under the "stay at home" rule which ends on Monday.

From next week the ban on leaving the UK will become a specific law, backed up by the threat of the fine.

Under the current plan for easing restrictions, the earliest date people in England could go abroad for a holiday would be 17 May.
