Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9095 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0919 USD
£1 GBP = 1.0995 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9158 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Thousands expected in Cornwall for Europe’s first satellite launch
Start Me Up mission will send nine civil and defence satellites into orbit from Newquay spaceport on Monday

As long as there are no last-minute technical hitches – and the Cornish weather does not spoil the party – the historic Start Me Up mission will take off on Monday night from Spaceport Cornwall, blasting nine satellites into orbit.

Two and half thousand people snapped up tickets within two hours for the Cornish launch, with a silent disco laid on to keep the blood pumping on what could be a cold night.

At the centre of the mission is a repurposed Boeing 747 aircraft called Cosmic Girl fitted with Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne rocket carrying the nine satellites. The 747 will take off from Spaceport Cornwall before releasing the rocket at 35,000ft over the Atlantic Ocean to the south of Ireland.

The plane will return to the spaceport, while the rocket will take the small satellites, with a variety of civil and defence applications, into orbit. They will be the first satellites launched into space from Europe.

A historic rocket launch that will blast satellites into space from the UK's southwest coast will take place on Monday.

So long as the weather cooperates, the initial window for the Start Me Up mission will open at 10.16pm, when the LauncherOne system will be carried skyward from Spaceport Cornwall.

It will be nestled under the wing of a converted Boeing 747 nicknamed Cosmic Girl, and with it a payload of satellites.

How will the launch work?

This will be a horizontal launch rather than a NASA-style vertical one.

Given Cosmic Girl is an old Boeing 747, the view from Spaceport Cornwall will not look dissimilar to any other plane taking off when it takes to the sky under the cover of night.

Under its left wing is LauncherOne, which will be released at 35,000ft over the Atlantic Ocean before accelerating to 8,000mph on its mission to deploy seven satellites into orbit.

Will you be able to see it?

You most likely will - in fact, it will be visible across the UK, Ireland, and parts of France, Portugal and Spain.

Virgin Orbit says people in the UK and Ireland should be able to see LauncherOne within 60 seconds of ignition, while coastal regions in France, Portugal, and Spain will get a good view within two to three minutes.

The entire launch phase is estimated to last approximately 10 minutes.

Flock of green parakeets swarm Leyton Orient football pitch as fans chant 'you're only here for the parrots'

Chants of “you’re only here for the parrots” rang around an east London football stadium on Saturday (January 7) after the arrival of an unlikely set of pitch invaders – a flock of parakeets. Around 50 of the bright green tropical birds flew around Leyton Orient’s Breyer Group Stadium for around 10 minutes as the EFL League Two leaders faced Doncaster.

Some photos that show the impressive size of ancient Thessaloniki, discovered during excavations for the new Metro underground railway. Makes me wonder what was destroyed when neighbouring modern buildings were constructed.

Insane world: Dad legally changes gender to female in bid to gain custody of kids from wife

A father has legally changed his gender identification in an attempt to gain custody of his two young daughters following a bitter split from his wife.

René Salinas Ramos, 47, is now listed as female on official documents in his native Ecuador — despite the fact he still identifies as a cisgender male in his everyday life.

The desperate dad claimed he made the drastic decision due to the justice system in his country which he said typically benefits mothers in custody cases.

“Being a father in this country, Ecuador, is punished and I’m only seen as a provider,” Ramos told local outlet La Voz del Tomebamba.

Vatican opens new inquiry into 40-year-old mystery disappearance of teenage girl
Fresh look at files on the case of Emanuela Orlandi is ‘based on requests made by the family’ which go back several years

The Vatican is to open an inquiry into one of its most enduring mysteries – the disappearance of a teenage schoolgirl 40 years ago.

Emanuela Orlandi was 15 when she vanished from the streets of Rome in 1983 while on her way home from a flute lesson.

The teenager was the daughter of a long-serving employee of the Holy See and lived with her family inside the walls of the Vatican City State.

Over the decades her disappearance has been linked to Cold War intrigue involving Pope John Paul II, Turkish nationalist extremists, the KGB, money allegedly owed by the Vatican to the criminal underworld and even allegations of sex slavery.

The case was the subject of a recent four-part Netflix series, Vatican Girl, made by an award-winning British director, Mark Lewis.
