Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9095 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0919 USD
£1 GBP = 1.0995 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9158 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Millions of cat owners could be forced to microchip pets
Legislation may be brought forward in ‘coming weeks’ to help reunite animals that have been run over with owners

Millions of cat owners could be forced to microchip their pets as legislation to make it a legal requirement is expected to be brought forward in the “coming weeks”.

The long-awaited proposals could soon be brought to parliament as MPs considered a petition on requiring drivers to stop when they run over a cat, according to the transport minister, Richard Holden.

Organisations including Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and the Blue Cross have called for a law forcing drivers to report hitting a cat, but Holden claimed microchipping is the best way to reunite owners with their dead pets.

Apparently there's next to no new cars available and pre-owned are going for silly prices, according to a mate on Kef. Plus the hope is for another busy summer with high demand. Bit of a struggle to imagine it will be when nurses, teachers, posties, rail workers, etc, are alleged to be dependent on food banks, and there's plenty paid less. We'll see.

Trial of Lesvos volunteer migrant rescuers adjourned to Friday

A group of 24 aid workers and volunteers who participated in migrant rescue operations on an eastern Greek island went on trial Tuesday in a smuggling-related case widely criticized by human rights groups.

The defendants deny all the charges, saying they did nothing more than help rescue people whose lives were in danger. The trial, being held on the island of Lesvos, began Tuesday and was later adjourned until Friday.

The aid workers include prominent Syrian human rights worker Sarah Mardini, a refugee herself and competitive swimmer whose sister Yusra Mardini was part of the refugee swimming team at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021. The sisters’ story was made into a Netflix movie.

Seal forces closure of lake after eating £3,000 worth of fish
Seal has spent month scarfing vast stocks of carp, bream, and catfish in Rochford Reservoir

Nelson, so nicknamed for being blind in one eye, has twice evaded capture.

Efforts by the RSPCA, Essex rural police, and British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) to safely rescue him are still underway a month on from his first sighting.

Though the reservoir is owned by Rochford District Council, Nick North, of Marks Hall Fisheries, has been the licence holder for more than 10 years.

Mr North closed the lake on 12 December after freezing temperatures caused the reservoir to freeze over. That same day, the seal was spotted submerged in the water, where he immediately began snacking on the prize catch.

“It’s ridiculous. It’s ruining my business,” a Mr North said. “It could probably get out if it wanted to but it won’t go. It’s got never-ending food supplies.

“It shouldn’t be here, this is fresh water, you’ve never seen a seal in a park lake or any lake really.

“It’s not made for fresh water. Even though it’s ruining my business. It’s still part of nature I suppose, just an unwanted part.”

The Shortest Flight In Greece Takes Less Than 5 Minutes!

Until a few years ago, Greece held the record for the shortest flight in the world. And that's because you actually stay in the air for not even five minutes. Another 15 minutes is accounted for in the schedule, but this for the time to get in and out of the plane.
