Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9098 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1045 USD
£1 GBP = 1.0991 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9054 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Lesvos man arrested for killing dog

A 78-year-old man on the island of Lesvos was arrested on Tuesday and charged with shooting and killing a stray dog in front of children.

The complaint was made to the police on Monday, a day after the incident, by a teacher at a primary school in the local community of Keramia. The dog, named Bingo, was a mascot of sorts for the children at the primary school as they cared for it daily. The dog, which was much loved by village residents, even joined them in class when they were having lessons.

The weapon with which the dog was shot has not yet been found and neither has its body. The 78-year-old was released after a case was filed against him.

Family discovers ‘absolutely massive’ black bear hibernating underneath the floorboards
Animal now called Marty Bearnard gains social media following as he is allowed to remain in a stupor at the residential home

It wasn’t like Callie, a three-year-old pet pitbull from Connecticut, to bark and growl. But then, she had never been faced with an enormous black bear laying underneath the decking of her family’s home.

“I’m just looking around trying to find it, then I turn my head to the right and there is a bear just staring right at me. And he was absolutely massive,” said Vincent Dashukewich, who lives at the property.

Sat there, stretched out on a bed of leaves, is the animal they now call Marty Bearnard.

“He was totally unfazed by everything,” said Mr Dashukewich. “As soon as we saw each other he didn’t move, he didn’t react. He’s definitely super comfortable.

"We'll just leave him be."

A contract has been awarded for asphalt paving of the lower part of Skala village, municipality confident it will be completed prior to the coming summer season... although that typically means the summer season for Greeks, July & August. Possible (?) the upper part of the village will also be asphalted.  There's also tentative plans for the road in Ratzakli. Around 75% of Skala village is claimed to have connected up to the biological system, majority of the remainder of properties owned by absent landlords. Poros pipeline problems should be resolved by regular flushing and cleaning. The lack of a doctor in Poros remains an issue.

Greece in moderate quake phase over last two months

In the past two months, Greece has seen an increase in seismic activity, with moderately strong earthquakes that do not exceed a Richter scale threshold of five degrees.

Indicatively, three locations, Lesvos, the sea area north of Crete, and Evia, have experienced an increase in seismic activity, but this coincidence is not thought to be related to usual geodynamic processes.

Moreover, more intense earthquake upheaval has occurred in Greece before.

Greece’s former king to be buried as a private citizen

Constantine, the former and last king of Greece, will be buried as a private citizen in Tatoi, the former summer residence of Greece’s royals and where his parents and ancestors are buried, the government said Wednesday.

A controversial figure in Greek history, Constantine died in hospital late Tuesday night at the age of 82. Greece’s monarchy was definitively abolished in a referendum in 1974, and Constantine spent decades in exile before settling in his home country once more in his waning years.

Suicides Increased In Greece By 25% In Two Years

Suicides in Greece increased by almost 25% from 2020 to 2022, as shown by the annual suicide data analysed and processed by the Suicide Observatory and the Day Centre for Suicide Prevention of the KLIMAKA organisation.

In particular, in 2022, the number of suicides reached 600, which corresponds to about two per day.

However, according to the report, the total number of recorded suicides is the tip of the iceberg. The problem is not fully understood since the under-registration of suicides is a worldwide problem, according to the World Health Organization.

ITV News podcast reveals Boris Johnson joked about 'the most unsocially distanced party in the UK'

Boris Johnson joked to Downing Street staff “this is the most unsocially distanced party in the UK right now”, during a boozy Number 10 leaving do, ITV News has revealed in an explosive new podcast on the partygate scandal.

The claim aired on Partygate: The Inside Story brings into fresh doubt Mr Johnson’s long-held position that he was unaware rules had been broken within Number 10 during the pandemic lockdown.

Mr Johnson is still due to appear before a Commons standards committee, which is investigating whether he knowingly misled MPs when he insisted all guidance had been followed at the event. When ITV News put the direct quote to Mr Johnson he did not deny saying it.

The claim is among several damning new revelations aired on the podcast - including an allegation staff deliberately destroyed evidence of partying before the Sue Gray and Met Police investigations, the latter of which would make 10 Downing Street the most law-breaking address in the country during lockdown.

Among other explosive new revelations made on Partygate: The Inside Story, Downing Street sources claim:

*    Staff corroborated their stories prior to filling out Metropolitan Police questionnaires.

*    The notorious party on the eve of the Duke of Edinburgh funeral service in April 2021 was even more debaucherous than previously documented, with at least two couples “getting it on with each other” and “touching each other up” and two other members of staff  “all over each other”  in a kitchen area.

*    Only 50% of the parties were ever investigated by Sue Gray or the Metropolitan Police.

Andrew Bridgen loses Tory whip after comparing Covid vaccine to the Holocaust
The backbencher tweeted that the vaccine was the 'biggest crime against humanity since the Holocaust'

The Board of Deputies of British Jews tweeted: "For an MP to suggest that Covid vaccines are the biggest crime against humanity since the Holocaust is unconscionable.

"We will be writing to the Chair of the Conservative Party Nadhim Zahawi to express our deep concern and to ask for clarification as to what action will be taken."

Mr Bridgen’s message was also condemned by fellow Tory MPs.

On Monday, Mr Bridgen was suspended from the Commons for five days after being found to have breached rules on paid lobbying and declaring interests.

Mr Bridgen was found to have approached ministers and officials on behalf of a forestry company, Mere Plantations, that had given him a donation, a visit to Ghana and the offer of an advisory contract, a role that ended up being unpaid.

Royal Mail overseas post badly disrupted after cyber incident
Company asks customers not to send international parcels and letters as it informs security authorities

Royal Mail has asked customers to stop sending parcels and letters to overseas destinations after a cyber incident caused “severe service disruption” to international exports.

The company said on Wednesday that it was temporarily unable to dispatch export items, warning that letters and parcels in transit to international destinations may be delayed.

Royal Mail’s Parcelforce Worldwide brand was still operating to all international destinations, but customers should expect delays of one to two days, the company said. Domestic post has not been affected.

It did not reveal the nature of the cyber incident, but Royal Mail said external advisers had been engaged to help investigate and the incident had been reported to regulators and security authorities.

The company has informed the government’s National Cyber Security Centre, which works to protect UK institutions from cybercrime, and the National Crime Agency, which tackles serious and organised crime.
