Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9061 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1197 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1036 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8931 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

E-car subsidy programme underway

A total of 17,801 e-cars were circulating on Greek roads in 2022, with new e-car registrations totaling 7,498 in the January-November 2022 period, accounting for 7.6% of all new registrations in the country.

The Greek government is currently implementing a programme which aims to promote the use of electric vehicles. The first cycle of the programme ended in December 31, 2021 and attracted around 19,000 applications (9% for cars, 22% for motorcycles and 69% for bicycles) of which 15,000 have been approved and 8,000 have received subsidies. The budget of the programme was 18.5 million euros.

The second cycle of the programme began in July 28, 2022 and offers higher subsidies. By November 2022, filed applications totaled 10,500, of which 28% for cars, 37% for bicycles and 35% for motorcycles. The government will also offer subsidies to replace around 2,000 taxis with new e-cars, a programme budgeted at 40 million euros from the Recovery and Resilience Fund.

Apple iOS 16.3 arrives with support for hardware security keys

Apple released iOS 16.3 today with long-awaited support for hardware security keys to provide extra protection against phishing attacks and unauthorized access to your devices.

Hardware security keys are small physical devices that resemble thumb drives and support USB-C (using an adapter) or Near-field communication (NFC) to connect to a Mac or iPhone.

These devices can be used as the additional verification step when using two-factor authentication for Apple IDs.

China can use people's fridges and laptops to spy on them, UK warned
Microchips embedded in routine appliances pose a 'Trojan horse' threat to national security, Government told

China has the ability to spy on millions of people in Britain by “weaponising” microchips embedded in cars, domestic appliances and even light bulbs, ministers have been warned.

The “Trojan horse” technology poses a “wide-ranging” threat to UK national security, according to a report sent to the Government by a former diplomat who has advised Parliament on Beijing.

The modules collect data and then transmit it via the 5G network, giving China the opportunity to monitor the movements of intelligence targets including people, arms and supplies, and to use the devices for industrial espionage. Millions of them are already in use in the UK.

Holidaymakers warned to watch out for fake deals amid cost-of-living pressures

People booking holidays are being warned to watch out for scammers, amid concerns that cost-of-living pressures may push them towards taking more risks with their cash.

Holiday fraudsters can lure people into paying by bank transfer using fake but convincing holiday adverts as well as via bogus websites and phone calls.

Rising living costs generally may make people more vulnerable to scams as they search for less expensive deals.

Raccoon rescued after private parts freeze to railway line in -12C Georgia

It was seen straddling the rail with its testicles stuck to the metal.

Neil Mullis used warm water and a shovel to dislodge the raccoon in a process that took five minutes – after which the animal ran free.

He told local media: “I poured the warm water under his bottom while a co-worker worked the shovel under his butt to try and break him loose.

“After about five minutes of slowly working him loose, he was free. He jumped off the rail and ran in the woods, never looking back.”
