Sixteen new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8785 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0976 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1383 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9111 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

TUI passengers going to Greece 'stranded' at airport for 40 hours

Hundreds of TUI passengers have been left "stranded" at an airport while waiting to travel to the Greek island of Zakynthos.

People say there have been angry scenes at Cardiff Airport, caused by a lack of information and claim that people, including children and the elderly, have been left with little or no food. The flight to Zakynthos was due to leave at 2pm on Tuesday (May 24), but passengers were still waiting to fly out on Thursday morning.

Information given this morning was that the flight was due to take off at 10.10am today (Thursday).

Passengers boarded a flight on Wednesday evening, Wales Online reports, but were then taken off the plane again after an health emergency meant it was too late to fly because the airport in Greece closes for the night.

Rishi Sunak announces £5bn windfall tax on energy firms
‘Temporary, targeted’ levy part of £15bn package intended to soften impact of cost of living crisis

Rishi Sunak has announced a £15bn package of support for households struggling with the cost of living crisis, part-funded by a £5bn windfall tax on energy companies.

The chancellor set out what he called a “significant set of interventions” to help offset the impact of rocketing inflation.

These will include a £650 one-off payment for families on means-tested benefits, and an extra £200 for all energy bill payers that will not have to be repaid.

The package will be partly funded by what Sunak called a “temporary, targeted energy profits levy” – a windfall tax.

Yesterday the Sue Gray report was released, strongly criticising BoJo. Today Sunak does a complete u-turn and announces a windfall tax on the oil and gas sector. Anyone sniff bribery and corruption?

Greece passes first climate law, vows to cut dependence on fossil fuels

Greece passed on Thursday its first climate law, which sets out specific targets to fight climate change and wean itself off coal in power generation by 2028.

The legislation sets interim targets for Greece to cut greenhouse emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and by 80% by 2040 before achieving zero-net emissions by 2050.

It also engages the country to cut dependence on fossil fuels, including weaning off indigenous lignite or brown coal - once the main source of energy - in electricity production from 2028 onwards. This target might be brought forward to 2025, taking into account security of supplies.

A leaving do is ‘work’ but a birthday party isn’t: Met chief explains how Boris Johnson wriggled off the hook
Sir Stephen House tries to clarify reasoning behind partygate fines that were issued – and those that weren’t – for Downing St gatherings

Lord Macdonald, who served as director of public prosecutions from 2003 to 2008, questioned why leaving events would be classified as reasonably necessary for work.

He said: "It seems inappropriate to have a blanket definition of that sort. What about a leaving do where people get drunk, abuse the staff, vomit on the floor and start fights?

"It would seem to be more sensible to assess each event on its merits. Most people would probably not accept that heavy drinking is necessary for work."

Lord Paddick, a former deputy assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan Police, said: "Members of the public would not consider a leaving do to be necessary for work purposes in the context of the pandemic."

Lord Paddick, now a Liberal Democrat peer who is bringing a legal action against the police over its handling of partygate, added: "For me, the evidence appears to be building up to suggest that the Met have done the minimum possible that they thought they could get away with."

Stephen Kamlish, a leading criminal QC, said it was wrong for police to have classified Mr Johnson's attendance at a leaving do as a work commitment.

Recycling fee on plastic packaging from June 1

An environmental tax, or recycling fee, of 8 cents on products whose packaging contains polyvinyl chloride (PVC) will be imposed from June 1 when the products are sold.

Under a law passed last summer, consumers are required to pay the fee per piece of product.
https://www.in.gr/2022/05/24/english-edition/recycling-fee-plastic-packaging-june-1/

Apparently natural mineral water bottled in Greece isn't in PVC bottles, therefore shouldn't attract the 8 cents levy.

Survey work on the Poros-Argostoli road improvements are underway, currently in the Markopoulos-Platies-Kolaiti-Adraki-Vlackata areas. Survey expected to be completed "soon" enabling work to commence.
