Kef fire risk 10/06/22: Low (https://www.civilprotection.gr/el/imerisios-hartis-provlepsis-kindynoy-pyrkagias-10062022)

Nine new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, none on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8822 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1065 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1335 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9038 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the Post Office (https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-money).
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

£4bn of NHS Covid PPE to be burned as it is unusable, says committee report
Opposition parties say the findings show the Conservatives are ‘burning taxpayers money by the billion’

Protective clothing worth £4bn bought early in the pandemic to stop NHS staff being infected with Covid is to be burned because it is unusable, a report has revealed.

The imminent destruction of so many items and waste of public money is disclosed in a report by the Commons public accounts committee (PAC) that is scathing of the DHSC’s strategy when the Covid pandemic struck in 2020.

The PAC, which oversees spending by Whitehall departments, found that the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has £4bn of PPE in storage which cannot be used by frontline workers because it is substandard.

Mother bear survives fall off cliff while defending cub from vicious attack

A mother bear survived a spectacular fall from a cliff while defending her cub from a male bear attack.

Footage shows the two adults fighting on the edge of the mountain close to Palencia, Spain, while the cub dangles from a rock.

Seconds later, the male and female bear tumble to the ground below.

After a two-day search, Spanish park rangers later found the injured mother and her cub alive deep in their burrow but the attacker, who rolled a long way downhill, died.

Thessaloniki: 4 Britons arrested over cocaine seizure in Italy

The arrest in Thessaloniki on Thursday of four people is linked to the seizure last month by Italian authorities in Calabria of 654 kilograms of cocaine onboard a ship bound for northern port city.

Police made the arrests as part of a large-scale operation to dismantle an international drug trafficking ring.

According to information received by Kathimerini, the arrested individuals, who are British, are expected to face charges in relation to the Italian seizure.

The cocaine had been stashed in a container filled with bananas that was part of a wider cargo of 50 containers ordered by a Greek import company.

The seizure had an estimated street value of 50 million euros.

Greatest shipwreck since Mary Rose discovered off coast of Norfolk
Discovery made by amateur divers who found HMS Gloucester finally revealed after being kept secret for 10 years

It has lain undiscovered on the Norfolk sandbanks for hundreds of years, since sinking during a maritime disaster that almost killed the heir to the throne.

Now, the wreck of HMS Gloucester has been found by amateur divers in what experts have described as the most significant maritime discovery since the Mary Rose.

The royal ship ran aground and sank in 1682 while carrying the future King James II, a Catholic heir poised to inherit the Protestant throne from King Charles II at a moment of acute political and religious crisis in Britain.

Parliament blocks disclosure of MPs’ porn site visits on ‘national security’ grounds

Parliamentary authorities have refused to reveal how much porn MPs and their staff are trying to look at on work computers, citing "national security".

The refusal is a change in policy for the Commons, which has previously disclosed how many porn sites were blocked on work computers on at least three separate occasions.

In 2013 parliament disclosed under FOI that computers on the parliamentary network had been blocked trying to access explicit content 309,316 times in the previous year.

In 2015 a similar disclosure revealed nearly 250,000 requests, and in 2018 the figure had fallen around 24,000.

‘A no-brainer’: World’s largest skyscraper farm to be built in UK

Two scientists, an agricultural economist and a farmer are on a mission to eliminate imports of soft fruits, herbs and salads to Britain within a decade with a groundbreaking “skyscraper farm”.

When built, the site is expected to be the world’s largest vertical farm - the growing space of which will equate to 96 tennis courts stacked in vertical layers.

In 2020, nearly half – 46 per cent – of the food consumed in the UK was imported.

Because vertical farming is carried out indoors – and not in the countryside – there is no risk of fertilisers running off and polluting the water streams. The company says it doesn’t use pesticides and that growing food vertically uses 95 per cent less water and can be done using 100 per cent green energy.

A vertical farm sees layers of plants grown on trays, stacked vertically with pipes delivering water, feed and nutrients... The temperature and humidity is controlled and light mimics the hours of sunlight. The inputs are controlled to ensure the product is uniform.

The company is experimenting with strawberries, hops, tomatoes and tree seedlings, and also has the ability to grow “fortified” food by putting extra vitamins into the water supply, but hasn’t yet opted to do this commercially.

Greek scientists pioneer therapy for osteoarthritis

A new cell therapy to treat osteoarthritis has been developed at the Cell and Gene Therapy Center in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA Children’s Oncology Unit at Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital in Athens.

The treatment entails the regeneration of the joint and drastically reduces inflammation.

Osteoarthritis is a common form of degenerative joint disease, affecting 13.1% of adults in Greece. Available medications offer pain relief, while the surgical replacement of the joint requires a long recovery period.
