P&O Ferries still paying crew less than £5 an hour two years after government pledged minimum wage

P&O Ferries continues to pay some of its crew less than half the UK minimum wage thanks to a gap in legal protection for seafarers, which the government promised to close.

On March 17, 2022, the company sacked 786 of its staff without warning and replaced them with agency workers who it said earned an average hourly rate of £5.50 an hour.

P&O admitted it had broken employment law by failing to consult the unions but insisted it had no choice as it needed to save money to avoid bankruptcy.

At the time, the company’s actions were widely condemned.

Greeks turn to private-label, domestic brands in response to inflation, survey shows

Greek consumers are increasingly turning to private label products as they strive to lower their supermarket bills in the face of persistently high prices, according to an annual phone survey conducted in January 2024 by the Marketing Lab of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), using a random sample of 1880 households.

There was also a marked movement in support of products made in Greece, the survey found, with consumers adopting a more mature stance and showing solidarity with domestic industry and employees.

Asked to identify who was most to blame for excessive price hikes, the majority (68%) picked multinational companies, with big supermarket chains in second place (24.2%). A much smaller percentage blamed domestic manufacturers (6.9%) and very few blamed small shops (0.9%).

Man killed in Crete after setting off flare

A 33-year-old died in eastern Crete on Sunday after the marine distress flare he set off in a central part of the town of Agios Nikolaos exploded.

The man, along with two friends of the same age, had brought 20 flares with them as they joined crowds celebrating the Carnival on Sunday. They had lighted 10 flares when the explosion happened, causing extensive injuries to his abdomen. He was transferred to the local hospital where he died shortly after midnight.

Police arrested his two friends.

One person charged for 2023 killing of dog in Arachova

A prosecutor has filed charges against an unnamed individual over the killing and torture of an eight-year-old Husky named Oliver in the popular winter resort town of Arachova, central Greece, in November last year.

On November 26, after having been reported missing for 24 hours, Oliver was found by his owner in his garden in the village of Arachova, bloodied, with broken ribs and blows to the head.

The owner lodged a complaint and the police launched an investigation.

Greek Police had claimed last year that video footage from the area and witness statements that Oliver was attacked by a pack of dogs, while Kleoniki Tola, a veterinary surgeon who carried out the initial medial examination while the dog was still alive is adamant that his injuries revealed that it had been beaten, tortured.

Black out at Argostoli hospital this evening, seems to be a problem that's occurred before. No reason known.
