Horrific car crash exposes Greece’s speeding problem

A video of a horrific accident on the Athens-Lamia national highway on Sunday, which left four people dead, has gone viral, exposing the dangerous problem of speeding on Greek roads.

The video showed a Porsche, driven by Giorgos Vakakis, the son of Jumbo toy store owner Apostolos Vakakis, plowing into a parked car and roadside restroom, causing an explosion.

The crash resulted in the deaths of Vakakis, his passenger and a 33-year-old woman with her 3-year-old son, who were in the parked vehicle. Experts assessed that the Porsche was traveling at around 200 kilometers per hour.

An enigmatic year for property in Greece

In some cases residential property prices fell by more than 65 percent between the end of 2008 and end-2016, one of the worst periods on record for the market in Greece. Today, prices have fallen to particularly attractive levels, especially when compared to those during the years preceding the economic crisis.

For a budget of around 40,000-50,000 euros, apartments of 100 square meters in excellent condition can be found in areas such as the Piraeus suburbs of Keratsini, Drapetsona and Perama; similar properties cost as much as 120,000 euros in 2008. There’s are also bargains to be had in more expensive neighborhoods.

There are some properties to be had for as little as 3,000-4,000 euros. These are mainly older structures in run-down parts of central Athens which the owners are trying to get rid of as quickly as possible in order to service other debts. However, according to market professionals, such sales are rare and the properties in question would find it difficult to secure buyers even in a healthy economy.

A black hole emerges over new social security fund’s first months

The revenues of the new Single Social Security Entity (EFKA) are showing signs of a black hole from the outset, and the Labor Ministry and the fund’s management are in a battle against time to collect at least 50 percent of the amount due by March 17, the new deadline granted for the payment of January contributions by freelance workers, farmers and the self-employed. Contributions from salary workers have beaten expectations.

Bad bug found in Microsoft browsing code

The problem is found in Internet Explorer 11 as well as the Edge browser and arises because of the way both programs handle instructions to format some parts of web pages.

So far, there is no evidence that malicious attackers are exploiting the problem.

No fix has yet been released for this vulnerability.

Just a warning - the vid was posted by someone from an outfit called "BestGore.com".

Like a number here, I expect, I've parked in a similar spot at one of those rest stops on that road.  Very scary.
