Fifteen new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8545 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1155 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1703 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8965 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

For flight sim fans:

More images come from Scenic Routes, showcasing Kefalonia Anna Pollatou Airport (LGKF) in Greece. The developer is aiming for a release this quarter and apparently, they’re really aiming to go full “scenic” with this. We also hear that it’ll come for both PC and Xbox.

“Outskirts and both approaches will all get covered, including the notable cliffs, port, hotels and beaches that are in the airport’s general area (on both approaches). Getting it out and into your sim is our top priority.”

‘A disaster waiting to happen’: who was really responsible for the fire at Moria refugee camp?

Days after fire destroyed the overcrowded camp, six inmates were charged with arson. Greece is now opening ‘prison-like’ secure camps in the Aegean islands as part of a growing tendency to criminalise refugees

Russian tanker impounded by Greece will be released, source says

A Russian tanker impounded by Greek authorities off the island of Evia this week will be released, a government source told Reuters on Thursday.

“The coastguard has been ordered by the anti-money laundering authority to release the vessel,” the source said, without providing further details.

The ship’s oil cargo had not been confiscated, the coastguard said.

MPs allowed by Speaker to call Boris Johnson a ‘liar’ in parliament

The Speaker of the House of Commons has permitted MPs to call Boris Johnson a "liar" during a parliamentary debate, breaking with recent convention.

The unusual step comes as parliament discusses whether the prime minister should face a standards probe for his conduct during the Partygate scandal – and over whether he misled parliament.

MPs are banned from using unparliamentary language in the chamber, which normally includes referring to other MPs as liars.

As Mr Blackford told MPs again "that the prime minister of the United Kingdom is a liar" and that this was "so obviously true" there were murmurs of discontent from the government benches but no intervention from the Speaker.

Polling suggests the public agree that the prime minister lied about partygate: YouGov found that 7 per cent per cent of voters think he has lied about the episode, including 61 per cent of 2019 Tory voters and 51 per cent of those still saying they would vote Tory.

Meanwhile a survey by pollster JLPartners released at the weekend found that the prime minister is widely regarded as a “liar” more generally by the public, with the term the most cited when a representative sample of voters were asked to describe him.

No walls!?! Must be same builders who did Parthenon. Mind you, what can you expect for a mere £5,300,000 / 6,325,000 euros these days?

Sudbury man fined for kicking hedgehog

A man has been fined after being filmed kicking a hedgehog several times.

Footage of David Herring, 53, of Manor Road, Sudbury, in Suffolk, kicking the animal several times in November last year, was sent to the RSPCA.

The RSPCA said the hedgehog was kicked with "considerable force", causing "pain and fear", with Herring showing a "clear disregard for a wild animal".

At Colchester Magistrates' Court he admitted causing unnecessary suffering and was fined £277.

Herring was also ordered to pay £300 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Boris Johnson to face third partygate investigation as MPs refer him for Privileges Committee probe

Boris Johnson will face a third partygate probe after MPs agreed the Privileges Committee should investigate whether he misled Parliament with his repeated denials about Downing Street parties during the coronavirus lockdown.

There was no need for the Commons to hold a vote whether to launch an investigation as the motion went through without opposition.

It was a damaging debate for Mr Johnson with several Tory MPs using their time in the Commons to call on the prime minister to resign.

Senior Tory Steve Baker said the possibility of him forgiving the PM for breaking his own coronavirus rules was "gone", adding: "The prime minister should just know the gig's up."

Minister: Easter Occupancy Levels in Greece are Positive Sign for Tourism Recovery

Occupancy levels for the Greek Easter holiday reflect a positive rate of recovery for the tourism sector and demonstrate a keen interest in traveling to Greece, said Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias.

The tourism minister on Thursday told SKAI television that occupancy levels for Easter showed lots of promise with popular destinations like Nafpaktos reaching 100 percent capacity, followed by Santorini, Evia and Ioannina (90 percent), Mykonos and Heraklion (85 percent), Etoloakarnania and Thassos (80 percent), and Kefalonia and Kalavryta (70 percent).

Greek Tourism Sector Facing Staff Shortages Ahead of Season

Greece is about to launch its tourism season with more than 50,000 jobs still open despite the high wages on offer, said former Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) president Andreas Andreadis.

Indicatively, only 10 percent of last year’s seasonal employees have been re-hired so far leaving open more than 50,000 job positions mainly in Halkidiki, Crete, Rhodes, Santorini and Mykonos.

In response to Andreadis, the head of the Panhellenic Federation of Catering and Tourist Industry Employees (POEET) Giorgos Hotzoglou said the reasons jobs in tourism are not being filled have to do with the working conditions in the summer and the actual pay.

Hotzoglou told ThessToday.gr that seasonal workers, aware of the conditions, are turning to other industries for work. He went on to add that POEET has received dozens of complaints about employment rights violations. On top of that, hundreds of chefs, cooks, waiters and others professionals were unable to survive in the last two years of Covid-19 job insecurity. Many chose to either seek work abroad or change industry. Above all, Hotzoglou referred to the low pay and grueling working conditions... adding that tourism enterprises on Mykonos, Santorini and Paros are looking for people to work seven days of week, 10-12 hours a day with accommodation and food and a salary of 700 euros while a number of employers are finding ways to avoid social security coverage.
