Kef fire risk 01/06/22: Low

Eight new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8769 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1034 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1404 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9063 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Partygate: Explain why fine did not breach ministerial code, Boris Johnson told

Boris Johnson's standards adviser says there is a "legitimate question" over whether the PM broke the ministerial code after getting fined for Partygate.

The PM said being fined by the police does not break the ministerial code'

The ministerial code outlines the rules government ministers must follow when in office, including the "overarching duty" on them to comply with the law.

If the code is broken, the convention in Westminster is for a minister to resign.

Strange events on Kef yesterday: the body of a dead and and rotting sheep was left in a large, industrial-type, bag on Ammes beach, Svoronata and another on Lourdas beach. Both pretty promptly removed by municipality workers. Possibility more will be found (by smell, maybe).

Greek restaurants feel the heat as Souvlaki prices soar

As Greek restaurateurs gear up for the summer season, they are keeping a wary eye on the potentially damaging impact of inflation - amply illustrated by the soaring price of a signature snack popular with both locals and visitors.

Averages prices for souvlaki have risen far faster than headline measures of inflation - hovering at a 28-year high around 10% in Greece read more - trotted out by national statistics agencies.

The classic meal of grilled meat wrapped in flatbread with salad and garlic yogurt now costs 3.30 euros (£2.85) on average in an around Athens, up an eye-watering 30% from last summer.

With the cost of its main ingredients - meat, vegetables and sunflower oil - all up sharply along with energy prices as war and pandemic disrupt supply chains, the surge lays bare some of the main pressures facing the world economy at grassroots level.

Long seen as an inexpensive treat accessible to almost anyone, souvlaki has increasingly become the kind of item people on tight budgets think twice before buying.

The Grill and Restaurant Union in Athens says that the price of pork has risen 30% the last 12 months, the sunflower oil generally imported from Ukraine by 125% and electricity bills more than 100%.

Masks to remain in ferries, taxis, pharmacies

People will still have to wear facemarks inside ferries, taxis and pharmacies in June, the committee of experts advising the government on the coronavirus decided unanimously on Wednesday.

Masks will be mandatory for both driver and passengers in taxis, passengers and crew inside ferries but not on the open decks, though health authorities advise in favor of their use if it is crowded. This measure will be reassessed at the end of the month.

Boris Johnson’s flat donor Lord Brownlow made pitch for £115m exhibition

The Conservative donor who paid £112,000 towards the refurbishment of Boris Johnson’s flat gave the prime minister a 21-page proposal for a festival to exhibit everything from the Magna Carta to flying cars.

Lord Brownlow of Shurlock Row shared his detailed vision for a £115 million “Great Exhibition 2.0” to be staged at the Royal Albert Hall.

The event in central London, proposed for this year, was not taken forward despite Brownlow being ushered in for a private meeting with a cabinet minister at the height of lockdown last year. Brownlow pitched the festival while he was helping to pay for a lavish of Johnson's flat above No. 11 Downing Street.

Senior Tory Says UK Should Rejoin Single Market To Ease Cost Of Living Crisis

A senior Conservative MP has called on Boris Johnson take the UK back into the European Union's single market in order to help mitigate the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Tobias Ellwood, who chairs the defence select committee, said the Brexit deal negotiated by the government had left industry "strangled" by red tape, and that securing closer economic links with the bloc would help bolster the economy at a time of soaring bills and widespread inflation.

Ellwood, who is one of the 28 Tory MPs to have publicly called on Johnson to resign, urged the prime minister to pursue a Norway-style relationship with the EU.
