Kef fire risk 02/06/22: Low

Twelve new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8771 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1033 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1401 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9064 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Judge rules that bees, legally, can be fish

I read the headline and thought, "More political correctness gone mad?" but it makes sense, in the case of California's invertebrates.

It’s decided: decisive people no more accurate than self-doubters

It’s a trait best seen in the eager pub quizzer – a tendency to leap to an answer without a shadow of a doubt.

Now researchers have suggested that while people who have little difficulty making decisions are more confident in their choices, they are no more accurate than those who feel more torn.

Ancient Greek ‘graduate school yearbook’ discovered on marble slab

An ancient Greek inscription discovered on a marble slab in a museum collection is a ''graduate school yearbook'', according to experts.

The stone, which had been in storage at the National Museum Scotland (NMS) collection for more than 100 years, dates back to the first century AD.

It lists the names of 31 young men who together completed a year of elite military and civic training, known as the Athenian "ephebate", to prepare them for adult life.

The marble slab, which experts say could have been on display at the gymnasium where they trained together, was meant ''to create a sense of camaraderie and comradeship''.

The stone dates to the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius (AD 41-54) and was analysed as part of project to publish English translations of inscriptions from ancient Athens held in UK collections.

Tourists take Greek beach bar to court over £500 bill for two drinks and a ‘snack’

Two American tourists are taking legal action against a Greek beach bar after it charged them more than £500 for two drinks and a plate of crab legs.

Brenda Moulton and her 19-year-old daughter Kaylea were visiting the Platis Gialos beach in Mykonos when they claim the DK Oyster Bar lured them in and - they feel - grossly overcharged them.

Now the pair is taking legal action against DK Oyster Bar. Brenda Moulton’s lawyer, Marizanna Kikiri, says that her clients suffered threats and unfair treatment from the restaurant.

A website dedicated to warning tourists about the bar has even cropped up - on DKOysterScam.com

DK Oyster Bar did not respond to two requests for comment from The Independent.

Brexit means fall in crops and fewer British products in supermarkets, farmers tell MPs

Brexit has led to a decline in crops and fewer home-grown products on the shelves of Britain’s supermarkets, farming chiefs have warned.

Farmers in Kent told a visiting group of MPs that it has become easier to import some fruits than harvest them because of strict limits on the number of seasonal workers from the EU.

Tory imperial measures plan ‘utter nonsense’ and will add costs, says Asda chair
Supermarket chief slams move aimed at pleasing ‘small minority who hark for the past’

In a scathing attack, the Conservative peer said the push to boost the use of pounds, ounces and other outmoded weights and measures would only “add cost” and confusion to businesses.

“I’ve never heard such nonsense in my life,” Lord Rose told Times Radio on Thursday, branding it a “backwards” step aimed at pleasing nostalgic voters.
