Kef fire risk 06/06/22: Medium

Nine new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8798 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1052 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1366 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9048 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson to face no confidence vote this evening

Boris Johnson "welcomes" a vote of no confidence in his leadership, Number 10 has said, as he prepares for a poll tonight aimed at removing him as prime minister.

Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench Tories, announced on Monday morning that at least 15% of Conservative MPs had written to him demanding a vote.

More than the threshold of 54 MPs are understood to have submitted no confidence letters but it would require 180 of them to vote against the prime minister in order to oust him - meaning that scenario is highly unlikely.

The excoriating memo spreading like wildfire on Tory WhatsApp groups that damned Boris Johnson

Titled 'Party Leadership' and written by an anonymous Conservative MP, the 758-word document was spreading like wildfire on Tory WhatsApp groups as the Prime Minister was enjoying performances by the likes of Rod Stewart and Diana Ross.

Detailing the reasons why the man once dubbed "Big Dog" was "no longer an electoral asset", the excoriating document appeared to sum up the feelings of many backbenchers who feel their vote winner has turned into a vote loser.

No mention of the Ionian islands. So far the forecast for Kef isn't looking too bad for the week, apart from the probability of thunderstorms this Friday.

Boris Johnson's anti-corruption tsar quits – and tells PM to do the same
John Penrose says Mr Johnson broke Ministerial Code and must do the 'honourable' thing and 'stand aside'

Boris Johnson’s anti-corruption tsar has quit the Government, saying that the Prime Minister broke the ministerial code and must resign.

John Penrose, who has held the role in the Home Office since 2017, submitted his letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister this morning, calling on Mr Johnson to “stand aside”.

The former minister, who has been an MP since 2005, said in a letter written yesterday, that it was a “clear resigning matter” that the ministerial code had been breached as shown by the Sue Gray report, and that he would be voting against Mr Johnson in today’s confidence vote.

Covid fraud: how bounce back loans paid for cars, watches and even porn
As details emerge, concerns grow about Treasury’s efforts to recover almost £5bn wrongly claimed

When Keith Hamblett, a fruit and vegetable seller from Tyne and Wear, asked his bank for a government-backed loan in the autumn of 2020, the economy was still in trouble after lockdowns, and coronavirus cases were rising.

The Covid bounce back loan scheme was a welcome relief for many smaller companies, and Hamblett received £28,000.

But there was a problem: he had ceased trading, meaning he was not eligible for the support. Then, contrary to the terms, he withdrew £10,000, spending £2,400 on a luxury watch and the remainder on his own living costs. He then filed a bankruptcy petition with liabilities of £61,692.

These details have emerged via an Insolvency Service register of disqualified directors, which is publicising new cases of fraud, misrepresentation, error or misuse each week.

Other cases – flagged by the insolvency firm Real Business Rescue – include directors who spent tens of thousands on a Range Rover, a jetski, buy-to-let property, flying lessons and even pornographic websites.

This is where cost-savvy travellers should head on their next getaway in Europe

Post Office researchers polled 2,000 tourists on 26 foreign destinations they’d previously visited, asking them to rate the holiday hotspots on cost-effectiveness.

According to British holidaymakers, Spain is the best value travel destination in the world. It topped the league table, with 92 per cent saying it offered ‘good value.’

Brits love the Spanish mainland - but they’re almost as fond of the Spanish-governed Canary Islands. 91 per cent of respondents believe this beautiful island paradise offers value for money.

Greece placed third out of 26 countries, with an 89 per cent score.

‘The next parakeet’: Britain’s dawn chorus at risk from Asian songbird
Exclusive: invasive red-billed leiothrix could threaten native bird populations such as robins and blackbirds, researchers warn

A brightly coloured subtropical songbird from Asia could colonise Britain’s gardens and change the dawn chorus for ever, a new paper warns.

The highly invasive red-billed leiothrix could threaten native bird populations, particularly competing with garden birds such as the robin and blackbird, researchers say. Early signs suggest this little bird – olive green with a bright red beak and yellow throat – may already be establishing itself in gardens and woodlands in southern parts of the country.

The main cluster of sightings is around Wiltshire and Somerset, with a handful of reports coming from farther afield in south Wales, Merseyside and Kent, according to a new paper published in the journal Ibis.

“This could be the next ring-necked parakeet – it’ll be a change people notice,” warned lead author Richard Broughton from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, who said they could become a familiar sight on garden bird tables.

I've seen one parakeet in the wild around here - heard its song first.

Masterpiece worth £255,000 found on wall of empty London bungalow

A masterpiece oil painting found hanging on the wall of an empty bungalow in north London has sold for more than a quarter of a million pounds at auction.

The Depiction of the Madonna and Child by Filippino Lippi, a student of Boticelli, was painted in the fifteenth century.

It had hung inconspicuously on the wall of a house in Enfield for years, with its owner unaware it was worth a fortune. A 90-year-old woman with dementia, who has not been named, owns the painting after her father gave it to her more than 30 years ago.

Bill Gates: What the American magnate is looking for in Greece
The background of the visit of Microsoft founder in Athens, the interest for the “Greek Maldives” and the big investment in Eastern Attica

Business and pleasure was at the forefront of Bill Gates’ brief stay in Greece. Greek hospitality, the sun and the turquoise waters of the Aegean, in fact, seem to have whetted the investment appetite of the Microsoft co-founder. Thus, in case the information that wants him to be interested in acquiring a cluster of islands in the South Evia is correct, in the future he will repeat the route Seattle – Athens many times.

...according to information, he discussed the acquisition of property both in Mykonos and part of the Petalioi complex, between Marmari, Evia and Rafina. The “Greek Maldives”, with its rich prehistory of equally rich owners, have a total area of 22.5 square kilometers and consist of 10 islands and islets...

Boris Johnson to remain prime minister after winning confidence vote

Boris Johnson is to remain prime minister after scraping through a confidence vote aimed at ousting him.

The under-fire PM won with just 59% of the vote as a huge 148 Tory MPs said they wanted him replacing - a hugely damaging result for the PM.

Just 211 Tory MPs supported him out of all 359 who cast their ballots.

Under Conservative Party rules Mr Johnson is exempt from another leadership challenge in the form of a confidence vote for another year, however the 1922 Committee of backbench Tories is able to change those rules at any time.

The fact Mr Johnson faced a confidence vote at all is a huge blow for the once-hugely popular prime minister but the margin of his win means it's possible he may never recover.

Mr Johnson won a lower majority than his predecessor Theresa May, who was forced to resign six months after winning 63% of a confidence vote.
