Kef fire risk 17/06/22: Low

Eighteen new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, none on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8812 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0712 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1348 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9335 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

42 small Greek islands allocated nearly 500 million euros for development

Forty-two mayors of some of Greece's less populated islands met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at Maximos Mansion on Wednesday, ANA reports.

They discussed their cooperation with the government, as well as the implementation and progress of ongoing programs on these islands.

Even though each of the 42 islands has a permanent population of under 5,000, "they receive a total of nearly 500 million euros in funding from national programs for municipalities and also from NSRF resources," noted the premier.

Greece one of five sites hosting next-generation European supercomputers

Greece is one of five locations for the next generation of European supercomputers, as announced by the European High Performance Computing (EuroHPC) Joint Undertaking on Wednesday.

These machines will power further development of novel scientific and industrial applications in personalised medicine, development of new drugs, wind-farm design modelling, and biomolecular research.

The new sites will be connected and available to serve a wide range of European users in the scientific community, as well as industry in particular small and medium businesses, and the public sector across the EU and participating countries, the Commission said.

Pets under threat as rising costs make it harder for owners to care for animals

The biggest threat to animals in the UK is the cost of living crisis, according to a new Animal Kindness Index compiled by the RSPCA.

The report, based on a YouGov survey of more than 4,000 UK adults, found that even though more than two-thirds of the public describe themselves as animal-lovers, 70% of pet owners say they are worried that it's getting more expensive to look after their animals.

At the Llys Nini Rescue Centre in Swansea, manager Gary Weeks told me they’re not only seeing more people handing in their pets due to rising costs, but also a significant fall in demand for their rescued animals.

Pensions: Millions receive wrong amount 'for decades'

Millions of people have received the wrong pension for decades because of government IT failures, the BBC has learned.

The errors, which are understood to have been known about since the 1990s, have still not been corrected.

A former pensions minister described the scale of the problem as "truly mind-blowing".

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) says it is "investigating possible remedies".

Official analysis published last month suggests 23% of pensioners were underpaid, while 17% were overpaid.

Some people have been both overpaid and underpaid in different years, with the vast majority of errors worth one or two pence per week.

In 2002, it was decided by DWP officials that it would be too complicated to fix the problem, and a solution has still not been found.

Should be illegal in UK, too. IMO.

From 01 July residents in Greece will be able to register with a 'personal doctor' (GP) via their local pharmacist, who will have a list of local doctors.
