Kef fire risk 19/06/22: Medium

Sixteen new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8812 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0712 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1348 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9335 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Wildfire rages in Greece's Evia island, one village evacuated

A wildfire raged out of control in central Evia, Greece's second-largest island, on Saturday with authorities ordering the evacuation of one village, the fire department said.

Fanned by strong winds, the blaze spread across the slopes of mountainous forest in Gaia and authorities ordered the evacuation of the village of Kremastos as a precaution as the blaze got as close as 800 metres from some homes.

About 70 firefighters were battling the blaze on the ground assisted by nine fire dousing planes and four helicopters before the night set in.

Evia suffered devastating forest fires last summer that destroyed about a third of its forest cover.

First Cyprus-Greece Ferry in 22 Years Starts Service on Sunday

The first car and passenger ferry in 22 years linking Cyprus and Greece will set out on its first voyage on Sunday departing from the port of Limassol to Piraeus.

The Daleela will sail from Limassol to Piraeus every Wednesday and Sunday, while services from Piraeus to Limassol depart every Tuesday and Friday. The last sailing of the year will take place on September 16, from Piraeus to Limassol.

The duration of the trip is approximately at 30 hours.

Authorities in Israel have also expressed interest in joining the proposed new Greece-Cyprus ferry route, saying that they would like a port in Israel to be added to the itinerary.

Woman travels the world for free by catsitting

An Australian woman has revealed how you can travel the world for free by catsitting.

Madolline Gourley, 31, has toured across Oz and the US for next to nothing by offering her housesitting services and looking after people’s pets while they’re away.

The enterprising writer, originally from Brisbane, says she’s saved around A$28,000 (£16,050) in accommodation costs to date by using site TrustedHouseSitters.

She has even started a blog – titled One Cat at a Time – in which she shares updates on her trips and pictures of cute cats, plus gives others travel tips to follow in her footsteps.

Taxi fares to go up soon

Taxi fares will rise, following a decision by Deputy Infrastructure & Transport Minister Michalis Papadopoulos on Friday.

A sampling of the new fares is as follows:

- Minimum charged ride fare: 4 euros
- Starting rate: 1.8 euros (from then on, the fee for regular fare/Tariff 1 is 0.9 €/km; for night fare between 00:00-05:00/Tariff 2: 1.25 €/km)
- Additional fee to and from Greek airports: 4 euros (added to main fare).

Some exceptions for Athens and Thesaloniki airports. I suspect fares on Kef have already increased  :dunno:

Antikythera shipwreck dig season brings up massive marble head

Two human teeth embedded in a compact mass with copper traces were found during the May 23-June 15 underwater excavation of the Antikythera island shipwreck that dates to around 60 BC, the Greek Ministry of Culture & Sports said on Sunday.

Another finding during this marine excavation season was a greater-than-lifesize marble head of a man with a beard, which is identified as the Farnese type of Hercules, and could provide a fit with the headless statue no. 5742 at the National Archaeological Museum that was found by sponge divers in 1900.

The season is part of a five-year (2021-2025) excavation program at the well-known shipwreck that has yielded among other things the Antikythera Mechanism - an ancient calculation system - and several bronze and marble statues including the Antikythera youth, an iconic exhibit of the National Museum.

Etsy paid just £128,000 in corporation tax in 2020 in the UK despite £160m in sales

The online marketplace Etsy paid just £128,000 in corporation tax in the UK in 2020 despite racking up sales of $195.8m (£160m) as it funnelled business through Ireland.

The Brooklyn-based business would have been liable for corporation tax of almost £7m if it had booked all sales made in the UK at its local entity, Etsy UK, according to research by the campaign group TaxWatch.

Instead, the vast majority of UK sales – the total of which are revealed in Etsy’s US stock market filings – are booked via an Irish company, where they attract a lower tax rate. The tactic is similar to that used by a string of US tech companies including Facebook, Google, Apple and Microsoft. Amazon books much of its UK business via Luxembourg. There is nothing illegal about such structures but they raise ethical questions about where profits and tax are paid.

Does anyone have more info regarding the Poros-Argostoli  road project? Is the route changing? Are the roads being made wider? etc.

All I know is what's on this map I posted on 08 June. So far as I know, the road marked in blue is the present road, the long grey road may be the existing route via Pyrgi, Aenos and the Sami-Argostoli road - I can't tell from the map. The red and shorter grey roads are possibly existing roads/tracks that could be adapted to be part of the 'new' main road. I think there have been some missed opportunities in the past where building has been allowed so that widening the whole road would now be impossible, best we can hope for - and I think it's the case - is for overtaking lanes where possible.

While it may be more convenient to have wider, straighter roads, it erodes a bit of the old charm of the island - IMO.
