Kef fire risk 30/09/22: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.9217 GBP
1 €UR = $ 0.9997 USD
£1 GBP = 1.0850 €UR
$1 USD = 1.0003 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

‘Return to austerity’: Almost £50bn of cuts needed to fund tax breaks for rich, economists warn
Huge ‘unforced error’ set to push Britain back to George Osborne-era cuts, says think tank

The prospect of austerity has sparked anger among unions and campaigners, who warned the cuts to pay and services would be “an act of national vandalism and a huge betrayal of the British people”.

A group of 18 trade unions wrote to the PM demanding a “cast iron assurance” she would honour a Tory leadership campaign pledge that there would be no cuts to public services, already struggling with the impact of inflation.

“Frontline services are already at breaking point. They must not be sacrificed to make the top 1 per cent even richer,” said the letter signed by the TUC’s Frances O’Grady, Unite’s Sharon Graham and others. “We won’t allow the social fabric of this country to be destroyed.”

Google to build its first cloud region in Greece

Alphabet Inc's Google will set up its first cloud region in Greece, the company said on Thursday, giving a boost to the country's efforts to become a world cloud computing hub.

The deal is estimated to contribute some 2.2 billion euros ($2.13 billion) to Greece's economic output and create some 20,000 jobs by 2030, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.

Requirement to fit snow chains on Greek roads has been clarified updated, now only necessary to fit them when relevant competent authority decides so. There's a bit more to it, such as whether snow chains should be fitted to front wheels / rear wheels / all wheels and whether the law applies to hire cars. Whether / how the law will be applied on Kef...

Going back twenty years or so one of the car hire firms in Skala, either Etam or Greekstones, I think, advertised snow chains as one of the extras with their cars. It did seem rather bizarre in the blazing sun.

Periptero: An Integral Part of Everyday Life in Greece Might Become History

The kiosk, or ”periptero,” as Greeks call it, is an integral part of everyday life in Greece, selling everything from newspapers and cigarettes to snacks, soft drinks and ice creams. However, the economic crisis, the pandemic, and new consumer habits have all conspired in the decline of kiosks, which are now in danger of becoming history.

Nowadays, of the 9,904 kiosks across Greece in 2010, just 4,985 remain open for business today. Of those, a thousand are officially within the Municipality of Athens, though only four hundred are currently in operation.

The first kiosk in Athens opened in 1911 on Panepistimiou Street, and the idea of the kiosk soon made its way throughout Greece, becoming an institution.

Greek Chess Prodigy Ranked 3rd in the World

Greece is proudly rising in global chessboard as ten-year-old Greek chess champion Evangelia Siskou has won bronze in the World Individual Championship, which concluded on Tuesday in Batumi, Georgia. The Greek chess prodigy now ranks third in the world.

Evangelia Siskou was among the 101 female chess players from thirty-six countries, who participated in the championship in the under-10 girls’ division.

Her victory followed that of fourteen-year-old Nikos Poupalos, who was ranked fourth in the World Individual Championship in Romania just a few hours prior to her taking the bronze.

This English village saw out the last recession – but how has it fared 30 years on?
In 1992, the Telegraph sent a writer and a photographer to document a community for a year. Here’s what they found when they went back...

The English village lies at the heart of our collective imagination. It summons up a warm mental image: forever sunlit; roses climbing around cottage doors; cricket on the village green; cheerful evenings in the local pub; Christmas carols in an ancient church. England, our England.
