Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8876 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0832 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1266 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9232 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Revealed: Second firm pushed by Michelle Mone was secret entity of husband’s office
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/dec/06/revealed-second-firm-pushed-by-michelle-mone-was-secret-entity-of-husbands-office

Long read. Basically: the Guardian has evidence that Mone lobbed ferociously in favour of contracts worth £200m being awarded to two firms set up to benefit her husband, Douglas Barrowman, and family.

Barrowman was paid at least £65m in profits from PPE Medpro in September 2020, and then distributed the funds through a series of offshore accounts, trusts and companies.

One of the recipients, bank records indicate, was a trust of which Mone and her adult children were the beneficiaries. It received £29m in funds originating from PPE Medpro profits in October 2020.

Hm, there's a world wide disaster happening, how can we make a killing out of it?

Thousands take to streets in Greece in protest over 2008 shooting of teenager
Police tactics again in spotlight after shooting of Romany boy on eve of annual march for Alexis Grigoropoulos

Thousands of people have joined protests in Athens, Thessaloniki and other Greek cities to commemorate the fatal police shooting of a teenager, hours after violence erupted over a similar incident in the north of the country.

The victim, identified as Kostas Frangoulis, 16, a member of the Roma community in Thessaloniki, was severely wounded as he was pursued by a mechanised police division after allegedly failing to pay a €20 (£17) fuel bill at a petrol station.

The incident came on the eve of the anniversary of the death of Alexis Grigoropoulos – a teenager killed in 2008 by an officer in Athens’ Exarchia district – and once again cast a spotlight on the tactics of a police force frequently criticised for its heavy-handedness and brutality. The controversial circumstances of Grigoropoulos’s death unleashed the worst riots in decades nationwide.

Sky Express after cat denied boarding: "Incident under investigation; we will work with animal welfare organisations"

Sky Express issued a statement after the incident with a passenger and the owner of a sick cat who was not allowed to board the aircraft with her pet on the flight from Athens to Heraklion, Crete.

With a long text, Katerina Tsoukala criticised the intransigent attitude of an employee due to her refusal to let her travel with the car. The Sky Express employee even went so far as to ask her for a vet's certificate to make sure her pet's cancer is not contagious...

"The specific incident is already being investigated, and if it is established that some employees did not act in accordance with the prescribed safety regulations but also with the culture and values of our company, the necessary actions will be taken," reads the Sky Express announcement.

"This year more than 11,000 pets traveled with our company with care and safety," it stated.

The Craziest Conspiracy Theory In Greece: "Does The City Of Kilkis Really Exist?"

Social media users have concocted the craziest conspiracy theory in Greece and are seemingly unable to give an accurate answer as to whether or not the city of Kilkis actually exists.

No one can know how urban legends and conspiracy theories begin. However, in some strange way they travel by word of mouth and spread very rapidly. Something like this has happened with the city of Kilkis in Macedonia - a city that for many does not exist.

It seems that there are many who believe it and even write it publicly on platforms, such as Reddit or Twitter.

With a simple search for the word "Kilkis" you will find dozens of comments, photos or even videos from users who wonder about the existence of this city, stating that they "have never met anyone from there."

German police arrest far-right extremists ‘plotting to overthrow state’
Those arrested have the ‘goal of overturning the existing state order in Germany’, say officials

German police have arrested 25 suspected far-right extremists allegedly plotting to overthrow the state in an armed coup.

About 30,000 police carried out a series of raids across Germany on Wednesday and arrested members of a group called the Reich Citizen movement.

Federal prosecutors said 22 German citizens were detained on suspicion of “membership in a terrorist organisation”, and three people, including a Russian citizen, are suspected of supporting the group.

Just wondering... most household burglaries don't merit a police officer visiting the property, never  mind an investigation. Hens' teeth are more common that arrests. Different rules apply?

The Craziest Conspiracy Theory In Greece: "Does The City Of Kilkis Really Exist?"

Hm, I've never actually met Bryan.....  :hmm:

I am just a figment of my own imagination, Maik...!!  I can confirm that Kilkis does indeed exist.  And I know hundreds of people from here.  What the youngsters in the video say about the Mayor of Kilkis speaks volumes about the abysmal quality of the mayors we have had here for decades, and what they say about the standard of the streets is also true.  The pavements are so shot to bits by cars parking on them and the weight breaking the slabs that if you walk on them after rain you repeatedly get a jet of muddy water up your trousers/skirt as far as your crotch...  Either that or you trip over and fracture your arm, as my ex-wife did.  Heigh-ho.  But, yessirree, Kilkis does exist!!!

Not just a problem in Kilkis, vigilantes targetted pavement parked cars in a Manchester suburb:

Quote
A mum and her son have been left 'traumatised' after vandals spray painted the word 'MOVE' across her car and smashed the windows in a parking row.

The Nissan Pixo also had its tyres deflated while it was parked near to her Leigh home in the early hours of Monday morning.

A Ford Fiesta was also targeted by the rampaging thugs who damaged windows, let down tyres and daubed the word 'MOVE' across three vehicles in bright yellow paint.

Border Force staff at airports to strike over Christmas

Border Force staff are going on strike for eight days over Christmas at Heathrow, Gatwick and several other airports, the PCS union has announced.

About 75% of passport control staff are PCS members - and Heathrow has warned checks may take longer on strike days.

Thousands of other civil servants - including driving test examiners - will also be taking industrial action.

PCS boss Mark Serwotka said the strikes would "escalate" unless the government "put money on the table now".

Strikes at the Department for Work and Pensions and the Highways Agency have already been announced.
