Strong earthquake hits central Greece

A powerful earthquake hit central Greece on Friday but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or of serious damage to buildings.

A strong quake hit the same area last week, damaging hundreds of buildings and forcing many people to leave their homes and to take temporary shelter in tents provided by the authorities.

Britain is legitimate owner of Parthenon marbles, UK's Johnson tells Greece

Britain is the legitimate owner of the Parthenon marbles, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told a Greek newspaper, rebuffing Greece’s permanent request for the return of the 2,500-year-old sculptures.

Since independence in 1832, Greece has repeatedly called for the repatriation of the treasures - known in Britain as the Elgin Marbles - that British diplomat Lord Elgin removed from the Parthenon temple in Athens in the early 19th century, when Greece was under Ottoman rule.

Talks with the Archaeological Service are ongoing in the desire to have the 'I Love Kefalonia' sign back in place by the de Bosset bridge. If not successful the second choice is where the cruise ships dock. The main square and Post Office square were also considered by the Tourism Committee but not favoured.
