Un expert launches first official visit to Greece

United Nations Special Rapporteur Mutuma Ruteere will visit Greece from 4 to 8 May 2015 to evaluate the situation of racism and discrimination in the country.

This is the first official mission to Greece by the independent expert mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to assess and report on the situation of racism, racial discrimination and related intolerance in the world.

The human rights expert, who is visiting the country at the invitation of the Greek Government authorities, is scheduled to meet with Government officials, representatives of the legislative and judicial branches, UN agencies in the country, the National Human Rights Commission and the Ombudsman, as well as a broad range of civil society actors.

Author Ruth Rendell dies aged 85

She wrote more than 60 novels in a career spanning 50 years, her best-known creation being Inspector Wexford, which was turned into a highly successful TV series.

Rendell began her writing career as a reporter on an Essex newspaper.

However, she was forced to resign after filing a story about a local sports club dinner without attending. Her report failed to mention that the after-dinner speaker had died half-way through the speech.

If I recall, to get cash off the card you need to use an ATM, which could be tricky IF the ATMs get shut down for a while.

The only way to be sure is to take all your money in euros.  We were in Greece on Black Thursday (I think it was called)  in the 90's when none of the banks would exchange sterling. I was in Katelios at the time and if it weren't for the fact that Marino (God rest him) was prepared to keep changing money we would all have been up the proverbial without a paddle or, at least, very hungry and thirsty.  I will be taking a chunk of cash, a euro debit card and several credit cards. I hope  that will spread the risk.  If not I will take my ukulele and be found outside the Lighthouse.
