70% of world’s last remaining wilderness in just five countries, research reveals

More than 70 per cent of our planet’s remaining areas of wilderness are contained in just five countries and are at the mercy of political decisions regarding their future, new research has warned.

Urgent international action is required to ensure the preservation of these last pockets of intact ecosystems, the study says, which calls for mandated conservation targets.

The places where the greatest remaining tracts of wilderness containing mixes of species at near-natural levels of abundance were identified as being in Russia, Canada, Australia, the US and Brazil.

It makes some sense as some pax turn up with what seem to me large bags and there's then a load of hassle trying to find room for them in the overhead lockers. This now means Ryanair have three sizes of bag: hold, large cabin and small cabin. To take a large cabin bag you have buy priority boarding and these are restricted to 95 per flight. It's actually cheap but complicated and different airlines will have quite different rules and charges. Worth reading the article.

Apple flaw leaves millions of devices exposed to 'ping of death'

Millions of iPhones, iPads and Macbooks are vulnerable to a flaw that allows hackers to shut down any Apple devices sharing the same Wi-Fi network.

The company was told about the flaw by security research Kevin Blackhouse on August 9, and has released a fix in its most recent iPhone and MacBook software update.

Dr Lukasz Olejnik, independent cybersecurity and privacy researcher and advisor, told the Telegraph that the vulnerability was “as bad as it can get” and equated to a "ping of death".

Apple announced that it had patched the flaw in its most recent software update for iPhones, iOS 12 and for Macbooks on MacOS Mojave. However devices that have not updated remain vulnerable.

Work started on the Argostoli port area and surrounds, looks like it will be on-going during winter, possibly completed by May (2019?)

Focus on violent crime not misogyny, says police chief

Police should focus on burglary and violent crime and not incidents such as misogyny where no offence has been committed, a senior officer has said.

Misogyny is the hatred, dislike or prejudice against women.
