Tax evasion found in many professions

The long list of tax evaders identified by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue in the second half of last year includes doctors, lawyers, funeral parlors, private investigators and pensioners and shows that several sectors of the economy are more prone to tax evasion.

Inspections revealed tens of millions of euros of hidden incomes concerning previous years. Here are some of the most interesting findings:

Fact-checker Snopes cuts Facebook ties

Fact-checking service Snopes has said it is ending its deal with Facebook to fight fake news on its network.

Late last year, the Guardian published a report that suggested fact-checking firms were frustrated by Facebook’s lack of transparency.

The article quoted former Snopes managing editor Brooke Binkowski as saying: “They’ve essentially used us for crisis PR. They’re not taking anything seriously. They are more interested in making themselves look good and passing the buck… They clearly don’t care.”

Tax evasion found in many professions

Apparently a tourist accommodation company on Kef was found to have falsified tax returns for 2015/16 thus failing to declare 198,200.04 euros of taxable income.

Probably wasn't the only year and probably not the only (travel) company.

A man found “frozen solid” in his backyard is believed to be one of at least 27 people to have died because of a record-breaking cold snap in the US.

The 62-year-old was discovered outside his home in Cudahy, Wisconsin, on Thursday after colleagues raised the alarm when he failed to turn up for work.

The county’s medical examiner’s office told ABC News the man did not have enough clothes on to be outside as temperatures in the city plunged to -30C with a -40C wind chill on Thursday.
