Beavers given protected status in Scotland

Wildlife organisations have welcomed new legislation making beavers a protected species in Scotland.

It is now illegal to kill beavers or destroy established dams and lodges without a licence.

The animals were reintroduced to Scotland's waterways a decade ago.

There are currently about 450 beavers in Scotland, in Tayside and mid-Argyll.

Diet rich in coffee, fruit and veg ‘cuts breast cancer risk’

A diet rich in coffee, fruit and vegetables may protect against breast cancer, research suggests.

A new study presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Glasgow found a protective effect from a diet full of phenolic acids on the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer.

Phenolic acids are found in coffee, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Rich sources include raspberries, blueberries, apples, citrus fruits, plums, onions, coffee, red wine, cocoa and wholewheat, rice, corn and oats.

Prepare for Earth to be hit by meteor in your lifetime, says Nasa chief
‘Dinosaurs did not have a space programme. But we do, and we need to use it’

Dangerous asteroids flying past Earth are not rare, and more meteor strikes happen than the public is aware of, the head of Nasa has said.

At the International Academy of Astronautics’ Planetary Defence Conference on Monday, Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine said: “I wish I could tell you these events are exceptionally unique … but they’re not.”

Mr BridenstiMr Bridenstine used the example of the Chelyabinsk Event in 2013, in which a meteor about 65 feet across entered the Earth’s atmosphere over Russia. The huge blast it created as it entered injured more than 1,500 people, and damaged over 7,000 buildings.

Statistically, meteor events of that size happen once every 60 years, but Bridenstine pointed out there have been three such incidents over the last 100 years.ne used the example of the Chelyabinsk Event in 2013, in which a meteor about 65 feet across entered the Earth’s atmosphere over Russia. More than 1,600 free cash machines start charging fees, Which? finds

Britons are facing an increasing struggle to find access to free-to-use cash machines as nearly 1,700 terminals were changed into fee-paying machines between January and March this year, new research has revealed.

According to figures obtained by Which?, more than 1,250 ATMs were converted to fee-paying machines in March alone.

The consumer group said fees of at least 95p per withdrawal were imposed on 1,700 machines in the first three months of the year, with some fees reaching more than £1.99.

Treasured Greek Spice Saffron Heading for China’s Market

One of Greece’s most precious – and expensive – delicacies, its world-renowned spice saffron, will start being exported to China’s vast market by the end of May, as business and trade ties between the countries continue to grow.

It’s the world’s most expensive commodity because of the volume it takes to produce a large quantity. It is harvested by hand from the stigma of the saffron crocus, which only blooms for a short time during the fall months.

Brexit ferry fiasco costs taxpayers another £50m after Grayling cancels no-deal contracts

The no-deal Brexit ferries fiasco will cost taxpayers an extra £50m after transport secretary Chris Grayling axed all the controversial contracts.

The Department for Transport (DfT) will be forced to accept termination clauses agreed with the companies, which included a firm which had no ferries.

The settlement comes on top of a £33m payment to Eurotunnel, earlier this year, to settle its legal case over the cross-Channel contracts.

Fiona Onasanya: Peterborough to have by-election as MP ousted

There is to be a by-election in Peterborough after 19,261 people signed a recall petition to remove the city's disgraced MP Fiona Onasanya.

Ms Onasanya, 35, was jailed in January, and released the following month, after lying about a speeding offence.

She was expelled by Labour after her conviction and had been representing Peterborough as an independent.

A 10% threshold was required to remove Ms Onasanya, who will be allowed to stand in the by-election.

According to a spokeswoman for Peterborough City Council, the number of people who signed the petition amounted to 27.6% of eligible residents.
