Holiday costs to jump this summer, warns travel boss

Prices for international travel are set to rise this year, due to pent-up demand and fewer aeroplanes in service, a travel boss has warned.

Booking.com's chief executive Glenn Fogel told the BBC that holiday "prices are already going up".

Many airlines have significantly reduced the number of flights they operate due to travel restrictions.

Despite huge demand, uncertainty makes it hard for airlines to plan bringing more planes back into service, he said.

Greece remains green in positivity index

Greece can draw some optimism from the latest weekly maps of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) which has it “green” in terms of the Covid-19 positivity index (below 4%).

In the composite index, which plots coronavirus cases over the previous 14 days, the rate of tests and positivity, Greece remains “orange,” with the Aegean and Ionian islands, as well as most of the Peloponnese “yellow.”

‘A scene out of the middle ages’: Dead refugee found surrounded by rats at Greek camp
Chios case highlights deplorable conditions on islands despite EU allocating millions of euros to improve facilities, aid workers say

At a desolate refugee camp on the Greek island of Chios earlier this week, a young man died alone in a tent. By the time the guards arrived on the scene, about 12 hours after the Somali refugee’s death, the body was surrounded by rodents.

Asylum seekers who had initially alerted staff spoke in horror at seeing rats and mice swarming about.

It was Orthodox Easter Monday, a national holiday in Greece. The 28-year-old, who has not been named by Greek authorities, is thought to have died of natural causes.

Man, 54, shot dead on Zakynthos

A 54-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Ionian island of Zakynthos in western Greece on Friday.

Police said they found an abandoned, burned-out car that they believe those involved with the shooting were in. A Kalashnikov rifle was found inside the vehicle.

The suspects are believed to have escaped the island in an inflatable boat.

Grant Shapps unveils Government's 'green list' of countries - watch live

Most popular European destinations including Greece, France, Spain and Italy are on an amber list requiring any holidaymakers to quarantine for ten days on their return and take two PCR tests.

Mr Shapps urged Britons to avoid travel to “amber” list countries in the meantime as he warned that the extra border checks which all holidaymakers faced on their return would mean longer queues at airports.

Which countries are holidaymakers allowed to visit?

There are only 12 countries and territories on the green list so far - these are:

    Portugal
    Israel
    Singapore
    Australia
    New Zealand
    Brunei
    Iceland
    Gibraltar
    Falkland Islands
    Faroe Islands
South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands
St Helena, Tristan de Cunha and Ascension Island

The list will be reviewed every three weeks, and countries can be added or removed at short notice.
