New Support Measures for Greece’s Seasonal Tourism Workers

Five measures to support seasonal employees in tourism, licensed tourist guides, tour leaders, and tour bus staff were announced on Tuesday after being finalized by Greece’s finance, labor and tourism ministries in collaboration with the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE).

The news comes after Finance Minister Christos Staikouras pledged on Monday to channel more than 400 million euros into the tourism industry to help it recover after being among the hardest-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Relevant legislation is expected in the coming days.

More specifically, the measures are:

Greece's disputed joint custody law goes before parliament

Divorced fathers in Greece have their hopes pinned on new legislation granting them equal time with their children, but the proposed change faces a fierce backlash over domestic violence fears.

Supporters say the bill -- being discussed by MPs on Wednesday, a day before it is due to be voted on -- corrects an injustice in a country where mothers are granted custody in almost all cases.

But opposition parties and rights groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, argue that it disregards the risk of domestic violence and could endanger victims.
