Heard there's been an accident involving a tourist on Agios Thomas beach. No more details as yet.

Apparently he fell off a cliff behind the beach, taken to hospital in Argostoli. No news on his condition.

Greece sends aircraft to help Italy battle catastrophic fires in Sardinia

Greece has sent two Canadair CL-415 aircraft yesterday to help Italy in its fight against catastrophic fires raging on the island of Sardinia.

Greece  immediately responded with help following Sardinia’s request for support from other regions of the country, while Italy, in turn, appealed to EU member states for additional assistance.

Claims resurfaced that, for the past thirty years, fires in and around the villages of Kampitsata, Kapandriti, Agia Irini, Tzanata, Agios Yeorgios and Pastra have been started by a family of stock breeders who live in one of the villages just outside Poros. Allegedly, the fires are started when the wind is blowing away from their property and their cattle are moved away hours before the fires start.

According to local word of mouth the family are protected by the island's police. Allegedly an elderly priest who went to the police found his olive trees cut down the following day and locals have taken to settling scores themselves: allegedly earlier this year a tractor belonging to the family was torched in a field and three grazing calves shot. The following day a large fire broke out in the area.

I'm sure Roger will recall, as I do, that the former mayor of Elios-Pronnoi, Makis Metaxa, resigned citing official indifference to investigating claims against this family.

One thing I noticed when living on Kef (and other islands) was that in the heat of summer when the place was overrun with tourists some locals could lose the plot and become very excitable (and one or two were like that whatever the season). May be some truth to this story, could just be local jealousies.

 :dunno:

More Poros news: the floating 'pier' for tourist yachts is in the process of being installed in Poros old port. Maybe Mr Grossman will roll up there, if it's completed quickly (although his 'yacht' may be too big!)
