Another Femicide in Greece, Husband Then Drives Off Cliff
The toll of wives and partners being murdered in Greece – more than one a month – rose after police said a 53-year-old man allegedly stabbed his wife to death and drove off a cliff in an apparent suicide attempt while trying to flee.
He was not identified in keeping with Greek privacy laws often violated when it involves celebrities or politicians, nor was she named but Kathimerini said the alleged murder happened in Koukaki, a neighborhood near the Acropolis.
He was said to have attacked her shortly after 1 a.m. on June 24 – no motive reported.
Police sources not named told the paper that she was found in a pool of blood by the couple’s 24-year-old son who called them. It wasn’t said what type of knife was used nor how many times she was stabbed.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3: One injured in boat crash during filming in Greece
Cast and crew have been in the country filming the third edition of the popular romantic comedy
A person has been injured after two speedboats crashed on the set of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.
The accident took place on the coast of Thymari beach, south of Athens on Friday (24 June). Reports claim that the speedboats were carrying a total of 16 people, including actors and set technicians.
As a result of the collision, one of the speedboats capsized.
One person is said to have incurred “light injuries” and was transferred to hospital as a precaution, according to the coast guard.
“They are all safe,” a coast guard official confirmed.

Sailing boat with one passenger sinks after collision with ferry
A sailing boat sank in the sea between Oropos and Eretria after colliding with the ferry Protoporos XIII.
The only passenger on the sailing boat, a German national, fell into the water and was rescued by the ferry, which transported him to Eretria, from where he was taken to Halkida hospital.

Greek Island Ferry Boat Rates Increase Again
Greek ferry operators increased fares to the Greek islands by up to 10 percent this month, citing soaring fuel costs.
This is the second ferry fare hike since April with the majority of coastal shipping companies increasing rates by 5 to 10 percent. In April, tickets rose by 10 to 12 percent.
According to local media, a third ferry fare increase may follow for certain destinations and routes in July.

When Mount Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago Pompeii's ancient residents were frozen in place by ash.
So too it turns out were the city's flora and fauna - including a pregnant tortoise with her egg.
Archaeologists found the reptile's remains buried under ash and rock where it had laid undiscovered since 79AD.
The tortoise was sheltering beneath an already-destroyed building when volcanic disaster struck.

Acropolis Hill to get state-of-the-art security system
The Acropolis Hill in Athens, an ancient citadel located on a rock above the city and one of the country’s most visited ancient sites, will get a new, high-tech security system for real-time monitoring of the area, after the country’s top archaeological body approved the replacement of the existing, old network of cameras.
Kathimerini understands that the system will consist of a network of more than 150 cameras that will be monitored through a control room on a 24-hour basis. The cameras can be configured to detect and alert if a visitor tries to take a stone from the scattered debris, an act which is explicitly forbidden.
It will also be able to send alarm signals to the police and includes audible signals to alert visitors and staff in the event of an emergency evacuation of the archaeological site, e.g. in case of fire.

Farmers warn of 'definite' turkey shortage this Christmas
There could be a shortage of turkeys for your Christmas dinner this year - and it's being blamed on bird flu and rising living costs.
The warning has come directly from farming groups.
Around 10 million turkeys are eaten in the UK each Christmas, but increased production costs are making it harder for farmers to rear them.
There are two things that could drive up turkey prices this Christmas. Firstly, because farmers are rearing less turkeys this year, there will be greater demand and smaller supply.

Frozen baby mammoth discovered in Yukon excites Canada
A whole baby woolly mammoth has been found frozen in the permafrost of north-western Canada - the first such discovery in North America.
The mummified ice age mammoth is thought to be more than 30,000 years old. It was found by gold miners in Yukon's Klondike region on Tuesday.
The area of the find belongs to the Tr'ondek Hwech'in First Nation.
The Yukon government compared it to Russia's discovery of a baby mammoth in the permafrost of Siberia in 2007.
It said it was "the most complete mummified mammoth found in North America", and only the second such find in the world.
The baby, thought to be female, has been named Nun cho ga, meaning "big baby animal" in the Han language spoken by Native Americans in the area.
