Kef fire risk 30/07/22: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8609 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0426 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1616 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9591 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Boris Johnson’s draft resignation honours list includes wife of former Putin minister

Lubov Chernukhin has donated nearly £2 million to the Conservative Party as well as bidding thousands to play tennis with the Prime Minister

The wife of a former minister in Vladimir Putin’s government is on a list of businesspeople and donors who are to be honoured in Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list.

A draft list being circulated by civil servants in Whitehall includes Lubov Chernukhin, who has bid tens of thousands of pounds to play tennis with the Prime Minister, and David Ross, one of the founders of Carphone Warehouse.

The news came as Gordon Brown, the former prime minister, said he had seen proposals drawn up by Sir Lynton Crosby’s CT Group to appoint up to 50 new Tory peers to force contentious Brexit-linked legislation through the House of Lords.

Each peer would have to agree to “sign away” their rights to make a judgment on draft laws, Mr Brown said, writing in The Guardian: “The document proposes that Johnson ride roughshod over every convention and standard of propriety in an effort to secure political nominees who will vote for the Tory Government.”

Ms Chernukhin, 49, has given nearly £2 million to the party. Her donations are controversial because of her marriage to Vladimir Chernukhin, a former deputy finance minister to the Russian president. She is a British citizen and her donations are legitimate.

Mr Ross, a multi-millionaire businessman, is a Tory donor who helped arrange a £15,000 holiday in Mustique for Mr Johnson and his wife Carrie in 2019. Mr Ross said he had not paid “any monies” for the trip and later clarified that he had “facilitated” accommodation for the couple. He was also reappointed chairman of the National Portrait Gallery last September.

Tiny turtle pooed ‘pure plastic’ for six days after rescue from Sydney beach

A baby green sea turtle rescued from a Sydney beach had eaten so much plastic that it took six days for the contents to be excreted, according to Taronga zoo’s wildlife hospital.

The 127-gram hatchling was found lying on its back in a rockpool near Sydney’s Tamarama beach. It was missing one of its four flippers, had a chip in another, and had a hole in its shell.

Carers said that aside from these injuries, the turtle appeared to be in good physical condition and had no trouble swimming.

Nah, I had one. Totally loyal, unlike BoJo, and never slipped his lead to have secret meetings with Russian agents.

China’s Plan for a Canal Trade Route from Greece to Europe

China is considering building a canal trade route from the Aegean sea to the Danube river to connect Greece and central Europe through the Balkans in order to expedite the shipping of goods.

The plan that is under consideration by China is a vertical link between the Danube, Europe’s second-longest river, and Greece’s northern Aegean coast, namely the Thessaloniki Port.

The navigable route will go via the rivers Morava and Vardar/Axios, thus reaching central Europe without circumnavigating the Mediterranean.
