Kef fire risk 06/08/22: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8676 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0486 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1526 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9537 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

25 best secret beaches in Europe

8. Kimilia beach
Kefalonia, Greece
This small, pebbly beach is loved by locals, an easy five-minute walk through lush forest. Its main attractions: snorkelling, glassy clear waters and a cluster of sea caves to explore. It also provides access to Kalamaki, a second, smaller bay. If you fancy a longer walk before you get there, why not take a refreshing dip on the better-known Emblisi beach and then follow the forest path west for a mile until you arrive at Kimilia. Nearby Fiskardo is the only town in Kefalonia to have retained its historic Venetian architecture since the earthquake of 1953.

Unconfirmed: an Air Tractor AT 802 Fire Boss 'plane, one of a substantial number of aerial firefighting aircraft on loan from Australia to Greece during the Australian winter season, sank yesterday while scooping up water from the sea near Salamina island while tackling a fire on the mainland at Nea Peramos, Attica. Two crew rescued uninjured by local coast guard vessel.

This 3,500-year-old tomb held the treasures of Greece's 'Griffin Warrior'

Discovered in 2015, the warrior's intact tomb not only contained his remains but also weapons, gold, and jewels that all gave new insights into the trade and culture of the ancient Mediterranean.

An olive grove in Southern Greece was the scene of a spectacular discovery in May 2015 when archaeologists discovered the tomb of a man they dubbed the “Griffin Warrior.” Crammed with artefacts, the grave offers up new insights into the origins of the Mycenaean culture whose mythical heroes starred in the Trojan War.

The Griffin Warrior’s tomb is located near Pylos in the Peloponnesian peninsula in southern Greece. The area had been well excavated in the 20th century, leading many to believe there was little left to discover. When the intact warrior’s tomb was uncovered in 2015, experts were surprised and delighted with the discovery. It surely promised to deliver new insights into ancient Greece.

Sir Keir Starmer promised to stand with striking workers in leaked footage
In a campaign video, the Labour leader also described himself as a ‘proud trade unionist’

Sir Keir Starmer promised during his leadership campaign that he would stand with striking workers in leaked footage that has provoked a new row with the Left.

The Labour leader joined members of the University and College Union (UCU) on the picket line on February 26, 2020, two days after online voting opened for party members.

Sir Keir has banned his frontbench from appearing on the picket line during recent industrial action, putting him on a collision course with the Left of his party amid a series of walkouts by the RMT railway union and other groups.

Shapps vows to create ‘death by dangerous cycling law’

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has pledged to create a “death by dangerous cycling” law that will treat killer cyclists the same as motorists.

Announcing the plans in the Mail+, Mr Shapps said the law is needed to “impress on cyclists the real harm they can cause when speed is combined with lack of care”.

The move will close a legal loophole which means that cyclists who kill pedestrians can only be jailed for two years.
